Oscar Piastri goes dumbfounded after Ferrari beats his McLaren in qualifying today
The Formula 1 season is already 13 races old. In the 14th round of the championship, being held at the Hungaroring, McLarens were looking strong enough to claim the pole. After all, the Papaya cars had made a clean sweep in all three practice sessions. Throughout the qualifying, the McLarens were basically dictating the pace. However, to everyone’s surprise the pole starter for tomorrow is Charles Leclerc in a Scuderia Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc was minutely ahead of the McLarens claiming provisional pole for today’s session. In fact, the Monegasque couldn’t believe himself and his performance. The Papaya cars behind him however, could not catch him on time and were relegated to P2 and P3 respectively. The entire results from Friday and Saturday’s practice session was to no avail in the changing conditions during the qualifying session.
McLaren is the highlight of the 2025 season. The team has been butchering the competition with poles and victories this season. The leader of their charge is Oscar Piastri. The Aussie who won his first race in Hungary last year is competing in Hungary this year as a championship leader.
The past weekends showed how overpowering the McLarens have been in this season. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are the only drivers who have been on the front row and winning the podiums. At this point, the championship battle is a intra-team fight between McLaren drivers.

Naturally, Oscar Piastri felt like he would be on pole once again. Earlier on, Piastri commented about his confidence in winning the championship. The seven-time-race winner in 2025 was left speechless after what happened in Hungary GP Qualifying. In his post-race interview, Oscar did not hold back his words at all.
Piastri claims that he did not expect a Ferrari on the front row today. It seems that the McLaren was rather looking forward to another fight between him and his teammate for leading the race tomorrow. Nevertheless, Oscar Piastri was still the faster McLaren today. He lost out to Charles Leclerc by only 0.026s.

The wind direction and cool track brought forth many changes in the final part of qualifying. Charles Leclerc’s pole lap was nowhere close to the McLaren drivers’ best laps in Q2. But, luckily the Monegasque was able to put his car in the right place at the right time. The race is going to be one which fans will looks forward to tomorrow after an exciting end to qualifying today.
nhl I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
