Not a soul can argue that Novak Djokovic is historically one of the most decorated athletes in all of sport. Another season has arrived, and the Serbian mainstay continues to be one of the favourites in any tournament that he features in. With the 2025 Miami Masters arriving, this is possibly among the last few opportunities for the current World No. 5 to leave his mark on the American soil. After all, he has a great record in the coastal city of Florida.

Novak Djokovic is making a return to the Miami Open after six years. The last time he played the event was in 2019, when he lost 6-1 5-7 3-6 to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Round of 16. Although Djokovic has not had the best of starts to the 2025 season, one cannot afford to make the mistake of counting him out. A record 40-time Masters-1000 winner, Djokovic begins his campaign against Australia’s Rinky Hijikata.

Owing to the fact that it has been over a decade since his last title at the event, paired with the fact that he is on a three match losing streak, it would take a gigantic effort for the 37-year-old to capture a record seventh championship in Miami. However, seldom has adversity managed to get the better of Novak Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic’s History and Record at the Miami Masters

Novak Djokovic made his debut at the Miami Masters in 2006, aged 18. One year later, he was lifting the coveted crown over his head. Over the next decade, the ‘Djoker’ went on to win six Miami Open titles in total – equalling the record set by Andre Agassi. Unfortunately, the duo never faced each other at the event, with Agassi playing his last match in 2005.

Holding an impressive 44-7 record in the competition, Djokovic has already etched his name in history. The Serbian won all of his titles at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne – the tournament’s ex-home. “I know that I worked hard throughout all my career to reach this point, and I hope that this is just the beginning of a long career,” Djokovic exclaimed after winning in 2007. Back then, he was the youngest champion at the event (a record that would eventually be broken by Carlos Alcaraz in 2022).

The path to a potential seventh title will be full of obstacles for ‘Nole’. As fans, it is a privilege to witness the last stretch of greatness in front of our eyes. Whether or not he can become the undisputed ruler of the American coast however, remains to be seen.
