Not Patrick Mahomes but this player has the most Super Bowls on the Chiefs’ roster

Joe Thuney has quietly built a Super Bowl legacy unmatched by anyone on the Kansas City Chiefs’ current roster. The offensive lineman, drafted in 2016 by the New England Patriots, is making his sixth Super Bowl appearance in just nine seasons. He’s won two rings with the Patriots and two more with the Chiefs. Thuney may not have the media spotlight like Patrick Mahomes, but he’s accomplished something few NFL players ever do.

Six Super Bowl appearances in nine seasons

Thuney’s career has been anything but ordinary. His six Super Bowl trips put him in elite company, tied with Stephen Gostkowski, Patrick Chung, and Mike Lodish for second-most appearances. Only Tom Brady, with 10, has more. Despite missing last year’s Super Bowl due to a pectoral injury, Thuney still played over 1,000 snaps that season before going down in the AFC Championship Game.

His journey to the top wasn’t flashy. Thuney played both guard and tackle, stepping in wherever the team needed him. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid even joked about the versatility he inherited from Bill Belichick:
“Bill [Belichick] let me have Joe Thuney, so I appreciated that. That kid, we have him out at left tackle now. Bill, you had him as an All-Pro center, All-Pro guard, now he’s out there at left tackle, and he doesn’t say a word about it.”

Thuney’s switch to left tackle

The Chiefs shifted Thuney to left tackle in Week 15 due to injuries on the line. Since then, he’s been rock solid, allowing zero pressures in the AFC Championship. Over the season, he’s played 780 pass-blocking snaps, given up just one sack, and allowed only 28 total pressures. His consistency earned him his third straight Pro Bowl nod and a spot on the NFL All-Pro First Team.

At Alter High School, Thuney’s journey was never about personal accolades. His parents, Mike and Beth Thuney, still call him “Joseph” and view him as the humble, hard-working kid who always gave his best. Now, they’re heading to New Orleans to watch him play in Super Bowl LIX.

Beth Thuney shared how proud the family is:
“It’s always a little nervous, but always excited… It’s icing on the cake if they win.”

Joe’s focus, however, isn’t on breaking records. According to his father, Mike:
“His key is just to try and help this team do something no other team has ever done — which is win three in a row.”

Could Canton be next?

At just 32 years old and nearing the final year of his five-year, $80 million contract with the Chiefs, Thuney shows no signs of slowing down. If he wins a fifth Super Bowl, he’ll tie for the second-most Super Bowl victories by any player, trailing only Tom Brady’s seven. While talks of a Hall of Fame induction may be premature, Thuney’s resume speaks volumes. For now, though, his sights are set on making history with the Chiefs.
