NHL Trade Rumors – Devils Goalie Jake Allen in Demand Ahead of Looming Free Agency

New Jersey Devils’ backup goaltender Jake Allen seems to be drawing a fair bit of interest from teams around the league. The soon-to-be 35-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and the Devils will look to get a trade done before the deadline.

As per reports, there are multiple teams that are interested in Allen’s services, starting with the Philadelphia Flyers. Anthony Di Marco, contributor at the Daily Faceoff, seems to believe the Flyers could look at Allen for their backup needs. Philadelphia is in dire need of help at the position, making this move a sensible one.

However, it is not only the Flyers that are interested in Allen. As per the trade rumors floating around, the Oilers and Sharks have also been linked to the veteran goaltender.

What’s more, the Hurricanes and Sabres are two more teams on the lookout for a quality goalie, given that the unrestricted free agency market is not a great one for the position this year.

Why the Devils Might Trade Allen

The ideal situation for New Jersey would be to extend Allen further and keep him in the backup role behind Jacob Markström. Allen, as the number 2, proved more than able last season, recording 2.66 GAA and a save percentage of .908 from 31 games. However, the Devils have other pressing needs to look after, and keeping Allen may not be a possibility.

The Devils are expected to hand most of the starting duties to Markström, while they also have the option to go with youngster Nico Daws should they need. They will need cap space to add depth to their forward group, and at the same time, they are looking to get a deal done with defenseman Luke Hughes, which could be a costly affair.

Paying close to $3.5 million a year for Allen at the moment may be beyond the Devils’ capacity. As for the New Brunswick native, cashing in on his form last season, both in terms of game time and financial compensation, will be a priority.

Allen’s play in the 2024 season has potential for him to earn a better pay day than what he could get from the Devils at this stage. Thus, there is a good possibility that he lands elsewhere. The only question that remains is whether the Devils can get a trade deal done in time or will they lose him for nothing in free agency.
