NFL Trade News – Jets Land Pair of Defensive Tackles, Chiefs and Broncos Deal Wide Receivers

With the regular season of the NFL nearly upon us, Wednesday was a busy day as a flurry of moves took place. Finalizing the 53-man roster is the biggest job at the moment, and mind you, it’s no easy task.

At this point in the season, it is doubtful that high-profile trades will take place, but as teams decide on how many players to keep for each position group, there are bound to be some getting cut. With that, let us take a look at all the trades that went down yesterday.

Jets Bolster Defensive Line

The New York Jets are looking to add competitive juice to their defensive line. While Quinnen Williams will lead the line, there have been several questions about who will play alongside him. Despite acquiring Derrick Nnadi this offseason, the former Chiefs player has reportedly not impressed during training camp.

In order to bolster the defensive tackle position and add more depth, the Jets ended up trading for not one but two players at the position on Wednesday, as they brought in Jowon Briggs earlier in the day and followed it up with the signing of Harrison Phillips.

Jowon Briggs Trade Details

ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Cleveland Browns traded defensive tackle Jowon Briggs to the Jets along with a seventh-round pick in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

The 23-year-old was selected by the Browns in the seventh round in the 2024 NFL draft and ended up playing six games last season. The Briggs trade is potentially seen as an added depth piece, as he is unlikely to be starting alongside Quinnen Williams.

Harrison Phillips Trade Details

After trading for Briggs, the Jets were not finished for the day. Their second trade was one that took place with the Minnesota Vikings. New York acquired its second defensive tackle, but this time went for a more experienced veteran in Harrison Phillips.

As per Schefter, the Vikings traded Phillips along with a 2027 seventh-round pick in return for a pair of sixth-round picks from the 2026 and 2027 NFL drafts. Additionally, the Vikings have also agreed to pay half of the $7.4 million salary that Phillips will command this year.

Phillips will provide the Jets with a steady presence on the defensive line, and he could be the answer New York is looking for. The seven-year veteran began his career in Buffalo when the Bills drafted him in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft. After four years in Buffalo, he signed a three-year contract with the Vikings, which was later extended for two more years in September 2024.

Broncos and Chiefs Trade Away Receivers

The AFC West should be an interesting division to follow this time around, as both the Broncos and Chargers are catching up to the Chiefs.

But the matter at hand for now is the trade news involving Denver and Kansas City yesterday, with the Broncos trading wideout Devaughn Vele to the Saints, whereas the Chiefs sent Skyy Moore to the 49ers.

Devaughn Vele Trade Details

Schefter was the first one to report a trade deal between the Denver Broncos and the New Orleans Saints in which the Broncos sent wide receiver Devaughn Vele to New Orleans in exchange for draft capital. Denver will receive a 2026 4th-round pick and a 2027 7th-round pick, as per sources.

Vele will now join the likes of Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Brandin Cooks in the Saints receiver room, but there are still plenty of questions on who will start under center. In any case, the 27-year-old wideout was drafted in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL draft by the Broncos and finished his rookie season with 41 catches for 475 yards and three touchdowns.

Skyy Moore Trade Details

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to do good business with the San Francisco 49ers. Surplus to their requirements at wide receiver, the Chiefs sent Skyy Moore to the West Coast along with what is being reported to be a 2027 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2027 sixth-round pick.

The Chiefs’ receiver room currently consists of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Hollywood Brown, followed by JuJu Smith-Schuster, Jalen Royals, and more. Moore, who was selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft, never panned out as per expectations.

Having said that, the 49ers are in desperate need of reinforcements as they will be starting the season without Brandon Aiyuk, who is still recovering from his knee injury, and Demarcus Robinson, who has been suspended for the first three games.

All in all, it was a rather busy day in the trade market, and as we get closer to the 53-man roster deadline set for August 26, we can expect a few more moves going through in the next few days.
