Good News for Cowboys Fans As Brian Schottenheimer Gives Major Hints regarding Micah Parsons Contract Extension

Devavrat Kulkarni

The biggest storyline of this offseason for the Dallas Cowboys and their huge fan base has been the ongoing contract extension saga of star linebacker Micah Parsons. Entering the final year of his rookie deal, the Cowboys have yet to hold serious discussions with the 26-year-old.

Despite the ongoing struggle, newly appointed head coach Brian Schottenheimer feels confident in the fact that Parsons will be out on the field playing in their Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles

“I think at the end of the day, we feel like Micah’s going to be out there when we line up against Philadelphia.”

What Is the Latest Update on Parsons Contract Talks?

Things have been rather quiet over the past couple of weeks, even after Parsons formally handed in his request for a trade. Both parties have expressed that no further development has been made over extension talks.

Prior to his request to be traded, Parsons decided to hold in, which means that he has been attending training camp but not partaking in any on-field activities. While he has been supporting his teammates at practice and during preseason games, he has not taken any active part in the games thus far. With just one preseason game left prior to the start of the new regular season, it seems that the contract standoff will continue.

Last season, the Cowboys were in a similar position with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Eventually, the Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, was able to work out extensions with both of his players, even though Prescott’s deal was signed just ahead of the season opener.

While that certainly is a possibility with Parsons, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter recently claimed that this situation doesn’t look like it’s heading the same way. Per Schefter, Dallas and Parsons look like they are heading toward a divorce, with the only question being when it will happen.

Will Dallas Trade Parsons?

The way things stand at the moment, it looks like a long shot that Dallas will trade Parsons this season. They still have the option of running out Parsons’ deal and then franchise tagging him for the next season.

At that point, if the two sides cannot work out a new deal, the Cowboys could start looking for suitable trade partners. For everything that Parsons has already done for this franchise, the postseason has been where he has fallen short. While his regular-season contributions and numbers are excellent, the same cannot be said of his playoff performances.

Should Dallas make the postseason and Parsons prove his worth, that could be the main factor in him getting the extension that he wants. Additionally, how Parsons will continue to approach his hold-in and whether he will take to the field in Week 1 even if an extension is not signed are some of the questions that continue to haunt Cowboys fans.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
