NFL Suspends Steelers WR DK Metcalf for 2 Games Following Wild Altercation with Fan in Week 16 Game against Lions

Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver DK Metcalf has been handed a 2-game suspension by the league for his altercation against a fan during the Week 16 game against the Detroit Lions.

This comes as a no-brainer decision by the NFL, given that Metcalf’s actions were evidently seen both on the field and were also caught on camera.

Why the NFL slapped a 2-game suspension on Metcalf

The NFL was forced to hand down a 2-game ban to Steelers’ wide receiver DK Metcalf as punishment for his actions during the Steelers’ Week 16 game against the Lions on Sunday. During a break in action, Metcalf could be seen grabbing the fan who was sitting in the front row by his blue wig and attempting to hit him on the head.

The veteran receiver’s actions is directly in conflict with the league’s policy which specifically states that ‘players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day and … if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable,’ as per the statement by the league.

Additionally, according to league policy, the former Seahawks receiver has the option to appeal the ban and present his case, which is something Metcalf plans to do, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

Should the league rule against Metcalf, the 29-year-old would end up missing the final two weeks of the season, including crucial games against divisional rivals, the Browns and the Ravens.

Metcalf could lose guarantees worth $45 million

Incidentally, it has also come to light that the fan whom Metcalf got into an altercation with was the same fan whom he had reported to the security during his time with the Seahawks. Apparently, it has been reported that the fan used offensive remarks against Metcalf, including racial slurs and a derogatory term about his mother.

However, the fan, who has since been identified as Ryan Kennedy by ‘The Detroit Free Press’ has denied any such incident taking place and approached an attorney to send out a statement terming these accusations as false.

In any case, should Metcalf’s suspension be reinstated, he is set to lose out on $555,555.56, which is his 2-game salary. Additionally, guarantees worth $45 million could also get voided due to the way his contract with the Steelers is drawn up.

As per a clause in his contract, should Metcalf not “practice or play with the Club for any reason,” the guarantees he has “will be Null and Void,” which includes a player suspension by the NFL or Steelers for “Conduct Detrimental.”

At this stage of the season, there is a lot riding on the league’s decision if Metcalf decides to go ahead with the appeal. The Steelers are currently battling for a spot in the postseason with the Ravens, and with Metcalf on the sidelines, Pittsburgh will have a much tougher chance of winning its final two games, one of which is against Baltimore itself.
