Kansas City Chiefs Officially Set to Leave Iconic Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri and Move to a New Domed Stadium in Kansas!

Major news to come out of the Kansas City Chiefs camp will have a tremendous impact on the franchise, its fanbase, and everything in between for Chiefs Kingdom. The Chiefs have officially announced the team will relocate to the other side of the Kansas City border and will call the state of Kansas its home in the future.

Chiefs moving from Missouri to Kansas

On Monday, the Chiefs, along with the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, announced a statement from franchise owner and chairman Clark Hunt that the team will officially relocate from Missouri to Kansas.

The Chiefs are set to build a new domed stadium in Kansas, and the announcement was made after the franchise discussed stadium plans with the Kansas Legislative Coordinating Council. As per Kelly, the new stadium cost is projected to be $3 million, and will be ready for the 2031 NFL season.

Hunt’s statement on the new stadium and the teams’ future plans read – “Today we are excited to take another momentous step for the future of the franchise. We have entered into an agreement with the State of Kansas to host Chiefs football beginning with the 2031 NFL season.”

“In the years ahead, we look forward to designing and building a state-of-the-art domed stadium and mixed-use district in Wyandotte County, and a best-in-class training facility, team headquarters, and mixed-use district in Olathe, totaling a minimum of $4 billion of development in the State of Kansas.”

The Chiefs’ current lease at Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri is set to expire at the end of the 2030 season. Interestingly, Arrowhead is currently the oldest stadium in the AFC, and the Chiefs first started playing here in 1972.

What led to the Chiefs moving to Kansas?

While there could be multiple reasons, the main reason the Chiefs are leaving Missouri and relocating to Kansas has to do with financial aid for the new stadium. Earlier, there was a thought in place to carry out an $800 million renovation at Arrowhead that could see the stadium get a dome or a retractable roof in the hope of one day hosting a Super Bowl.

However, the state of Missouri approved a plan in which it would provide financial aid to the tune of half the stadium cost for the Chiefs as well as the neighboring Kansas City Royals MLB franchise. Both Arrowhead Stadium and Kauffman Stadium (home of the Royals) are next to each other and lie in Jackson County in Kansas City, Missouri.

However, Jackson County voters rejected an extension of a 3/8-cent sales tax, which would have helped the Chiefs in their proposed renovations to Arrowhead as well as helped fund a new stadium for the Royals.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the border, Kansas lawmakers voted in favor of allowing sales tax and revenue (STAR) bonds to be issued to cover up to 70% of the cost of the stadium, along with the mixed-use district it will accompany. The bonds are set to cover $2.4 billion, while the Hunt family is set to chip in with $1 billion for additional development, a portion of which can also be incentivized by the STAR bonds.

What will the new stadium provide?

With an eye on attracting the Super Bowl, the new stadium will provide either a dome or a retractable roof. However, that is not all, as per Hunt, this move was a family decision and one that was taken with the fans at the center of focus.

“We made a decision as a family that this was the right opportunity and the best for the organization for several reasons,” Hunt said. “It’s about the fans. My dad [Lamar Hunt, who founded the franchise] was always about the fans and thinking about the future.”

“This will give Chiefs Kingdom a state-of-the-art facility for multiple generations, a building that can last for at least 50 or 60 years.” Hunt continued, “We believe it’s the best thing for the region. It will give Kansas City the opportunity to bid on events that we can’t host right now, like the Super Bowl, the College Football Playoff, and the NCAA Final Fours.”

The exact location of the new stadium has yet to be finalized, but as per Gov. Kelly, the new site will be in Wyandotte County. The Chiefs are reportedly interested in building their new stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, near what is called ‘The Legends’ (near the Kansas Speedway and a retail and entertainment district).
