The Indianapolis Colts hosted the San Francisco 49ers for a prime-time matchup. The Monday Night Football (MNF) game between the Colts and the 49ers was a pivotal one for both teams.

While the Colts were battling to keep alive any hopes of getting into the playoffs, the 49ers were looking for their fifth straight win and a way to keep pace for the number one seed in the NFC. Eventually, a dominant display on offense helped the 49ers clinch a 48-27 win over the Colts.

Colts’ defense struggles to contain Purdy and the 49ers

49ers’ quarterback Brock Purdy had a field day on MNF as the offense scored on each drive, as their punter was seen being bored on the sideline. Along with Purdy, tight end George Kittle and running back Christian McCaffrey also had big games on the offensive side of the ball.

In the end, Purdy finished with a career-best 5 passing touchdowns and completed 25 of his 34 attempts for 295 yards, and a passer rating of 126.8. Kittle, who left the game early due to an ankle injury, was the most prolific pass-catcher on the night, finishing with 7 receptions for 115 yards, including one touchdown grab.

Christian McCaffrey continued his dominant season, stepping up both from the backfield and the pass game. The 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year had 21 carries for 117 yards, while adding 6 catches for 29 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Philip Rivers doesn’t miss a beat in just second start in 5 years

One of the biggest takeaways in this game was the gameplay of the Colts’ quarterback Philip Rivers. After making his way back to the NFL approximately 5 years after his last snap, Rivers’ second game and first one at home didn’t disappoint.

Although he didn’t light up the field, his ability to get the ball out quickly and find his targets did not resemble a professional footballer who had been out of action for so many seasons. Despite the Colts’ defense being unable to restrict the 49ers from scoring at will, it was Rivers who kept Indy in the game until the final stages of the fourth quarter.

Rivers’ final game stats read 23 completions from 35 attempts for 277 yards with 2 touchdowns and one pick-six. Rivers was also more than decent in the pocket, taking just 1 sack the whole night.

Brock Purdy throws career-high 5 touchdowns

49ers’ signal caller Brock Purdy was on point throughout the game with his passing game. With the Colts’ defense, especially the banged-up secondary, not able to offer much resistance, Purdy made some big throws time and again.

That said, Purdy did have one interception after he threw a ball high above his receiver’s head, which hit Kendrick Bourne in the hands before finding Colts’ defender Camryn Bynum.

Jonathan Taylor neutralised by 49ers’ defense

In spite of the fact that the Colts remained in the game until the very end, when things fell apart quickly, Indianapolis couldn’t get its run game going. The 49ers came up with a solid game plan to restrict Jonathan Taylor, who has been having a career season.

As a matter of fact, San Francisco’s defense allowed just 54 rushing yards on the night, while Taylor was limited to only 46 yards from 16 carries for an average of 2.9 yards per carry.
