On June 30, 2025, the Miami Dolphins traded cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. That very same day, ESPN’s NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, encountered a funny situation while trying to get the story out.
The ESPN football insider had landed in Pittsburgh and was actually driving to the Oakmont Country Club, the 2025 US Open (Golf) venue, when the trade talks between the two teams were in the process of being finalized.
Speaking on the ‘Adam Schefter Podcast’ with Ty Schmidt, the co-host of the Pat McAfee Show, Schefter narrated a detailed account of what exactly took place when he was trying to get the story out on social media.
After receiving the phone call, Schefter was told that he would be updated as soon as there was any development. At around 10:15 that Monday morning, Schefter reached the Club and was talking to the young golfer Neal Shipley when he received a text saying the deal had gone through.
Schefter then tried to press send on his phone and tried to follow the story, but his phone kept buffering. Schefter then proceeded to tell that he literally tried to send the story for 5 minutes with no luck!
“I will remember the Steelers trades as the day that I got to go to Oakmont, the site of the US Open this past year. And it’s actually pretty funny because I got a call that the Jaylen Ramsay trade was in the works and in the process of being finalized as I landed in Pittsburgh. They’re like, we’ll let you know if and when we can get this done. So, I pull up to Oakmont. I walk into the clubhouse. And I’m talking to Neil Shipley. I get a text. ‘Jaylen Ramsey trade agreed to.’ So I press send on my phone, I go to follow the story, and it just keeps going like this (circular finger motion), I’m like, what is going on? So literally 5 minutes trying to send the story on X.”

The rare player-for-player trade, and another trade.
Schefter then recounted how he tried to go outside in order to get better coverage on his phone, and was greeted by Steelers fans wanting to know whether there was any truth to Minkah Fitzpatrick’s departure, something that the NFL analyst didn’t know at the time. After some time, Schefter found out that tight end Jonnu Smith was also part of the deal.
By the time his crew could confirm all the details of the trade and he was able to put out the story on his social media platforms, he was due to join the Pat McAfee Show.
“So I go outside and I get the call, do you know that Mink is a part of this? like Minka Fitzpatrick’s a part of the… do you know that Jonnu Smith…it just kept growing and growing and growing and so I’m standing outside the locker room in the clubhouse at Oakmont on what should be a relaxing first trip gathering more and more Steelers trades in Pittsburgh while I’m in Pittsburgh and I got Steelers fans walking over. Is it true that we just traded Minka? And then after we get all the information and are able to confirm and finalize it and post it on Twitter and Instagram and threads, we come on the Pat McAfee show.”
In the last 35 years, there have been four individual players traded between the Steelers and Dolphins – Minkah Fitzpatrick (Sept. 2019), Minkah Fitzpatrick again, Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith.

The NFL Insider joined the Pat McAfee Show from the clubhouse patio, wearing a hat and carrying his phone, only to be told that both items are not allowed on the patio. The 58-year-old then proceeded sarcastically by saying he will probably never be allowed back at Oakmont after he broke all the rules.
“So I do the show from the patio. I’m wearing my hat on the patio. They’re like, “Yeah, no phones on the patio. No hats allowed on the patio.” I violated every rule at Oakmont on my first trip. I’m probably never invited back again, because I broke every rule in the club, because it was the day that the Steelers made trades involving three different players.”
And if things couldn’t get any worse for poor Schefter, rain and lightning delays caused him to play well over 15 hours of golf over two days. After reaching the airport on Tuesday afternoon, his flight got cancelled and he had to drive back to New York for 7.5 hours.
Overall, it was a very eventful trip to Oakmont for Schefter on the day the big trade went down. Talking on his podcast, the NFL Insider said that this is how he will always remember that day, whenever the topic of Jalen Ramsey’s trade comes up.

nfl I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
