Chiefs’ Rashee Rice Car Crash Verdict – Will the NFL Suspend Rashee Rice After Probation and Jail Time Sentence?

The verdict on the Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver Rashee Rice’s car accident that took place in the 2024 offseason is out, with the Dallas district court judge sentencing him to 30 days of jail time and a 5-year probation.

As per a statement released by the Dallas County District Attorney’s office, Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges, which include a collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The statement also mentioned that Rice was driving a Lamborghini that was in the midst of “multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic” at high speeds of 119 mph.

As per the Dallas district court judge, Rice will have the option to serve his 30 days of jail time at any time of his choosing within the 5-year probation period. As per the current understanding, this 30-day jail time is non-negotiable. A statement from Rice’s lawyer, Royce West, on his client’s behalf was also included in the media report from the DA’s office, in which Rice has taken responsibility for his actions.

“Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart. Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families.”

Will the NFL Suspend Rice Ahead of the 2025 Season?

Since there was very little to no information coming out about Rice’s case, several lawyers were under the belief that the receiver would be able to play out the entirety of the 2025 season, and that the league’s suspension would carry over to 2026.

However, in light of the recent update and with the Dallas court announcing the result of the case, the NFL is now expected to expedite its process and hand out a suspension this season to the Chiefs’ third-year receiver.

The NFL’s spokesperson, Brian McCarthy, has ensured that the league is monitoring the developments of the situation closely, but there is no fixed timeline for further action at the moment.

“We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review. There’s no timeline on next steps.”

Rashee Rice Car Crash incident from 2024

Last year, on March 30, 2024, Rice was involved in a high-speed racing incident on a highway while driving a Lamborghini. His friend was driving a Corvette, which was registered in Rice’s name, and their racing incident ended with a car crash that caused a multi-car pileup.

Although no lives were lost, the Chiefs’ receiver didn’t check on the welfare of those involved in the crash and fled the scene on foot. Two of the people who were injured in the crash sued Rice following the event, and as a result of the lawsuit, the Super Bowl LVIII winner has been ordered to pay $1 million in damages as well as the lawyer fees of the plaintiffs.

As mentioned earlier, the league is expected to hand out a suspension to Rice this season. When and for how many games the NFL decides to suspend Rice are the most important questions on hand at the moment.

Irrespective, this will now be a crucial blow for the Kansas City Chiefs. Rice, who was drafted in 2023, started to show great signs of improved play toward the end of his rookie season. Last year, he started off well, but his season was cut short after just 4 games after suffering an ACL tear.

He was expected to be a central figure in the Chiefs’ offense this season, but with the latest development, there is more than a good chance that Rice would be out for at least half the season, if not more.
