Von Miller Reportedly Signs One Year Deal With the Commanders – Active Sack Leader the Latest Addition to a New Look Washington Defense

Miller joins an already impressive defense in Washington!

Former Bills’ linebacker Von Miller has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders. News broke out after Miller posted an image of himself wearing the Commanders uniform, followed by a person close to the source announcing it to The Associated Press (AP).

Buffalo released Miller earlier this March, and since then, the 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year had been on the lookout for another team. The 36-year-old believes that he still has what it takes to make useful contributions on the football field.

That said, the once-highly feared defender is most likely to have more of a rotational role on the Commanders roster, but even then, a player of his capability can surely add sufficient value to an organization in contention for a Super Bowl appearance.

What Does the Commanders’ Defense Look Like With Miller’s Addition?

Washington’s defense in 2025 boasts some of the biggest names in the league. Up front, the Commanders are led by defensive tackle Daron Payne. Behind him, Frankie Luvu and Bobby Wagner make two top-quality linebackers, while the secondary is led by the 2017 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Marshon Lattimore.

Now, throw in 2-time Super Bowl Champion Von Miller to the mix, and on paper, you have one of the strongest defenses in the league. But, how much of a force will this new look defense be, considering Wagner and Miller are already in their mid-30s, while the others are nearing 30?

Payne saw quite a bit of a drop in his performance last season, both in terms of statistics and overall dominance. Although he was still a key player contributing to big plays, he was not as effective as his 2022 season. Similarly, Lattimore also had an off year after missing out on multiple games due to a hamstring injury.

On the other hand, linebackers Luvu and Wagner continued their high level of play. While Wagner has understandably dropped his production level, he still remains a big force to reckon with. Luvu, though, is coming off a career-best year with 99 tackles, 8 sacks, and an interception.

Miller’s Contributions in His Three Years With the Bills

The Super Bowl 50 MVP, Miller, did not have the best time in his three seasons with the Bills. Prior to joining the team in 2022, Miller was an integral part of the Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl-winning team in the previous season.

Midway through the 2022 season, Miller injured his knee in a Thanksgiving Day game. Afterwards, the injury was ruled as an ACL tear, and he missed the remainder of the season. The following year, Miller was not quite the same after his injury, and his production dipped massively.

Although the former Broncos’ linebacker has played in 12 and 13 games for the past couple of years, respectively, Miller has not started a game since 2022. What the Commanders are getting on the field is an aging star limited to a rotational role.

However, there can still be more to this signing than meets the eye. For one, Washington will have an additional voice in the room, one that preaches leadership and can mentor the youngsters as well. Miller will bring a Championship-winning mentality who can still provide quality play as a depth player on the Commanders roster.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
