NFL Insider Adam Schefter Believes The Browns Selecting A QB Is A Lock

The 2025 NFL’s Scouting Combine is officially over and now it is time for teams to focus all their attention on the upcoming draft in about a couple of months. A lot went down this past week in Indianapolis as the best of the best in all positions arrived at the Combine to interact, undergo tests, and show their physical prowess.

While each franchise has a lot to think about in terms of their needs, it is the Cleveland Browns who have an interesting decision to make. After signing the former Texans’ quarterback Deshaun Watson in 2022 to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract, nothing has gone right for the team. Watson has missed a plethora of games due to injuries and suspension and is once again set to miss a majority of the 2025 season due to another Achilles injury suffered in January of this year.

Cleveland’s QB Situation

The way things stand right now, Watson is the QB1 for the Browns and he is due to receive more than $90 million over the next couple of seasons as part of his fully guaranteed contract. Cleveland is currently over the cap space and will need to restructure Watson’s contract as they have done in the past. Letting Watson go will result in a ton of dead money, which means there is a good chance he remains in Cleveland till the end of his contract in 2027.

Nevertheless, Cleveland has been on the lookout for quarterback options even before Watson’s latest injury, but now it seems that the Browns will surely evaluate all their options and move ahead with a new QB under center. The two options for the Browns at the moment are to either find a veteran in free agency or look towards the draft.

Adam Schefter’s Logic

According to ESPN’s NFL insider, Adam Schefter, the Browns are in a ‘no-brainer’ situation where they must draft a quarterback in the upcoming 2025 NFL draft. Cleveland currently holds the number 2 overall pick after Tennessee, and although this draft class is considered to be on the weaker side as far as quarterbacks go, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are two names considered to be worthy starters.

On his very own podcast, the Adam Schefter Podcast, Schefter described that the one thing he felt most confident about heading into the draft is that the Cleveland Browns will draft a quarterback with their number 2 overall pick.

“The thing that I feel most comfortable and confident in this upcoming draft is that the Cleveland Browns at number two will wind up taking a quarterback because they have to, because logic dictates that, because common sense dictates that, because they have Deshawn Watson who you don’t even know is going to be able to play again in the upcoming season hurt having undergone another surgery on his torn Achilles, you have all the money invested in him so you need financial relief, and you need a quarterback, and the only way to do that is to be able to do it at number two.”

Schefter also went on to add that the Titans with the number 1 pick still have options and if they choose to go with a generational player such as Travis Hunter or Abdul Carter, then Cleveland can pick any quarterback they believe to be the best in the draft.
