NFL Coach Headset Change – How Will the New Sony Headsets Help the Coaches Even More?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Sony's new headsets have undergone testing under severe environments!

The NFL’s persistence on technological advancements in the league is a positive for all those involved with the game. As the league continues to develop more and more means to improve the game through various means of technology, the latest development comes in the form of the much-improved and more coach-oriented Sony headsets for all 32 teams.

The NFL and Sony have partnered to custom-develop a completely new headset, which is based on all the suggestions and feedback provided by the coaches in the league. These new headsets have undergone an immense amount of testing and are now ready to debut for all teams during the preseason.

Key Aspects of the New Sony Headsets

While the new headsets for the NFL coaches were built from scratch, keeping in mind the tough conditions and issues faced by the coaches of the league, the technology has been borrowed from Sony’s consumer product, the WH-1000XM6, which is a wireless headphone for the masses.

These headsets come with noise cancellation technology, but the new headsets for the NFL have been modified to cater to the sideline needs of the league. For instance, Sony tested the noise cancellation technology and fine-tuned it after testing it at a 100 decibel noise level, which is generally what is heard around NFL stadiums during game time.

Moreover, the headsets will also come equipped with a handy custom-built mic that can isolate the voice of the coach and mute it once communication is over. Matt LaFleur, the Packers’ head coach, was all praise for Sony’s new headsets, explaining his happiness over the fact that the company listened to the coaches.

“As a head coach, communication to my staff and players is everything. Sony took the time to understand exactly what we need – from clarity in noisy environments, to comfort and reliability when the pressure is highest. This headset took all factors of the game into consideration, and I am looking forward to being able to rely on them during the game throughout this season and beyond.”

The durability and ability to function in different conditions was another important factor. Plenty of NFL games are still played outdoors, and these headsets need to work whether it is during a hot, sunny day, during rainfall, or even the cold winter games in places like Green Bay and Buffalo.

In order to ensure the climatic conditions do not cause havoc, Sony Audio’s product manager, Shunsuke Nakahashi, explained how their engineers tested the headsets under showers to check their waterproofing ability, outside in the hot and humid conditions in Tokyo, and also in freezers for times when it is extremely cold.

It is truly commendable that the amount of work Sony has put into this project. Understanding the pain areas of the coaches and the other difficulties of the game has gone a long way in creating a better product that should provide quality communication between the players and their sidelines, one less thing to worry about.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
