San Francisco 49ers 2025 Season Already Has a Huge Wide Receiver Problem!

The San Francisco 49ers’ 2024 season didn’t go according to plan at all. Coming off a Super Bowl loss the previous year, this largely unchanged team had the ability to get back to the summit last season.

However, that was not to be. Injuries, of course, were the focal point of the disastrous 6-11 record that meant they finished last in the NFC West. Most of their playmakers on offense were out for many games, and the team just didn’t click on several fronts.

That was all last season. This year, the team has had an eventful offseason to say the least. Several key players from the roster were either allowed to leave in free agency or were traded, largely due to the Brock Purdy contract extension situation. But now that everything is all settled, the 49ers have a new problem to worry about.

Growing Concerns Amidst the Wide Receiver Room

Following a contract stand-off with Deebo Samuel, the 49ers ended up trading him to the Washington Commanders, losing their former WR1 in the process.

The room makeup now consists of Brandon Aiyuk as the new leader, followed by Jauan Jennings, second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, and another second-year wideout, Jacob Cowing, as the main pass-catching receivers.

However, the 49ers have to deal with a bunch of problem areas surrounding their top talent at the receiver position. Aiyuk is recovering from an injury, Jennings wants either a new contract or a trade, Pearsall was shot last year and is still recovering from that trauma, Robinson is facing a potential DUI suspension, and Cowing is undersized.

Brandon Aiyuk

In a week 7 game against the Chiefs in 2024, Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL, following which his season was immediately ruled to be over. Currently, the 49ers’ receiver is still getting back into football shape, and while he could theoretically be back for week 1, it is more than likely that he will miss the first few weeks this season.

Jauan Jennings

The issue with Jennings is that he wants a new contract. Last season, Jennings stepped up and grabbed his opportunity with both hands, putting in nearly a 1,000-yard receiving season and a career-best 6 touchdowns when the likes of Deebo Samuel and Aiyuk were either struggling or injured.

Now, he wants that work to be recognized with a better contract, or the second option is that he wants to be traded. These terms don’t bode well for the organization, which might still be willing to hang on to one of their talented players, but it may come at a price.

Ricky Pearsall

Ricky Pearsall, who was selected by the 49ers with the 31st overall pick in 2024, was supposed to have a good rookie year. However, just days before the start of the new season, Pearsall was shot and placed on the reserve/NFI list due to a gunshot wound to the chest.

Despite making a comeback and playing 4 games last season, Pearsall’s rookie season was a very short one, which limited his growth as a player at the highest level of the game.

Demarcus Robinson

The former Rams wide receiver, Demarcus Robinson, could potentially be suspended by the league over his DUI case. While the court fined the player $390 and imposed thirty-six months of probation, where he had to undergo DUI training, the NFL has yet to react with any type of suspension.

Since the league generally waits for any cases to be over before it announces any suspensions, the league could jump in now that the case is over. Robinson could be looking at multiple games missed this season.

Jacob Cowing

Jacob Cowing, the fifth receiver on the 49ers roster, has a size problem. The Arizona Wildcats alum stands at just 5 feet 9 inches in height and weighs approximately 172 pounds. That makes him one of the smallest receivers in the NFL and poses several disadvantages at the professional level, including a lack of reach, a smaller catch radius, less physicality, and more.

A lot of the 49ers’ passing game will depend on the trio of Aiyuk, Jennings, and Pearsall. If things are not right with all of them, San Francisco could be staring at another difficult season ahead. With so much going on at the same time, the 49ers’ locker room could be a tense one for sure.
