Eddie Howe Post-Match Interview: Updates on Newcastle Injury, Word on Isak, and More

Newcastle United sustained a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in their first home game of the Premier League 2025/26 season. Yet to register a win and with only a point from their first two games, Eddie Howe and his side were seen gutted at full-time.

After coming from two goals down thanks to goals from Bruno Osula and William Osula. However, things went south for the Magpies as Rio Ngumaho scored the winner in injury time after Dominic Szoboszlai set him up for a tap-in. Manager Howe shared disappointment as he addressed the Anthony Gordon red card incident and the injury updates as well.

Howe Expression: The Disappointing Start to the Season

Howe in his post-game interview expressed disbelief in the outcomes of his side’s first two games. Managing only one point, the Newcastle manager also addressed the injury situations that the team suffered.

Talking about what he thought of Newcastle’s performance against Liverpool, Howe in his interview said:

“I think we deserved something from the game, the performance has been magnificent. Today is really a painful one for us because we deserved something from the game. But we lost the game, a few points and a few players due to injuries”

“Of course, you are frustrated to not get points when you play well because the league is relentless. So when there’s so much challenge you want to win when you play good but we have one point from two games despite playing good, which is a tough one for the lads to take”

The manager also addressed the injury situations sustained in the clash as he continued,

“It’s difficult for me to give an assessment but Joelington and Sandro Tonali both don’t look good. Moreover, Gordon will be suspended and Fabian looks concussed”

“Gordon tried to pull out. He tried to stop. There wasn’t any malice or intent to hurt Van Dijk… For me, there needs to be some sympathy.”

On being asked about the obvious Alexander Isak situation following the void, Howe said:

“I don’t know a lot about that situation, I’ve been preparing. But it certainly isn’t an ideal thing for us to lose a forward option”

Since Isak’s absence, Gordon was filling in the forward position. However, following his suspension and Joelington’s injury, Howe will probably turn to Osula who scored against Liverpool on Monday.
