Newcastle United Complete £55M Signing of Yoane Wissa From Brentford

Newcastle United have announced the signing of Yoane Wissa from Brentford in a deal worth £55 million, just hours after Alexander Isak’s record-breaking £130m transfer to Liverpool was confirmed. The 28-year-old DR Congo international penned a four-year contract with Newcastle on Transfer Deadline Day.

Wissa departs Brentford after scoring 45 goals in 137 Premier League appearances since his move from Lorient in 2021. The striker had not featured this season as he pushed for a transfer. Wissa will now get the opportunity to lead Newcastle’s front line in both domestic and European competition. He becomes Newcastle’s second major attacking reinforcement of the summer following the arrival of German forward Nick Woltemade.

Wissa to Wear No. 9 at St James’ Park

The transfer came after weeks of tense negotiations and public frustration from Wissa himself. Notably, Wissa called on Brentford to “keep their word” and let him leave before the transfer deadline. Wissa had refused to train with the squad in recent weeks. The 28-year-old, who netted 19 Premier League goals last season, had been Newcastle’s top target after Alexander Isak’s record-breaking move to Liverpool and Callum Wilson’s switch to West Ham.

Wissa has been handed the iconic No. 9 shirt at St James’ Park and will lead Newcastle’s line alongside Woltemade. For Brentford, the deal represents a significant cash-in on a player who will turn 29 on September 3. Wissa’s sharp instincts inside the box and consistency in front of goal made him an ideal fit.

After making the switch from Brentford to Newcastle United, Yoane Wissa said,
