Manchester United Goalkeeper Situation Solved: Senne Lammens Signs on Deadline Day

Moumita Dutta

Manchester United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp in a deal worth €21 million (£18 million), with an additional €4 million in potential add-ons. The Belgian shot-stopper has signed a five-year contract, keeping him at Old Trafford until 2030.

The move for Lammens was not originally part of United’s transfer plans. But it came following a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign. Andre Onana missed the opening weekend defeat to Arsenal. Altay Bayindir deputized in goal and made a costly error.

That error led to the only goal of the match, costing Man United important points. Onana’s shaky display in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town further intensified scrutiny over United’s goalkeeping department. 23-year-old Lammens emerged as a solution at that moment.

United viewed him as a long-term investment and someone who could also provide immediate relief and competition for Onana and Bayindir. Especially considering how low in the Premier League table they ended last season. After completing the move, Lammens said:

“I am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United. It is a real dream come true. You can feel the positive atmosphere that is being created here, and I know that I can make a real impact at the club in the coming years.”

Competition for Senne Lammens Signature

The Belgian keeper joined Antwerp from Club Brugge in 2023. He quickly established himself as their first-choice goalkeeper, making 44 appearances last season. He also helped the club secure European football. He also has nine caps for Belgium’s Under-21 side.

He has been included in senior squads for major qualifiers as well. However, he is yet to make his international debut. United faced competition for his signature. Aston Villa were also considering Lammens as a possible replacement for Emi Martínez. However, United acted decisively after Villa hesitated over their goalkeeper plans.

The Red Devils decided to make a move for Martínez mainly because of the Argentine’s £35 million price tag and age. The World Cup winner is turning 33 this week. With Onana expected to miss several weeks in December for the Africa Cup of Nations, Ruben Amorim now has the right backup and maybe even his first-choice goalkeeper.
