The New Orleans Saints got off to a blistering start in their 2024 campaign last year, winning their first couple of games with the offense putting up 40-plus points. However, their offense spluttered after that, losing the next 7 games on the trot and eventually finishing the year with just 5 wins.

There is a change in coaching and a new system will be implemented in New Orleans. The Saints have brought in Kellen Moore as their new head coach, the very same man who helped Jalen Hurts and company as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator and capped off the 2024 season with a Super Bowl ring.

Quarterback Tyler Shough Opens Up on the Offense Under Moore

This offseason, Kellen Moore landed his first-ever job as the head coach of an NFL franchise. Previously, he had worked as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys, Chargers, and more recently, the Eagles in 2024.

Saints’ rookie quarterback Tyler Shough was recently interviewed by NFL analyst Mina Kimes on the ‘Mina Kimes Show’, where she posed the question of how the team’s offense is likely to look under new head coach Kellen Moore.

“So far, it’s been a little bit of everything, which has been the coolest part. I think what I’ve seen, at least watching the film wise, is that offense kind of grows.”

Kimes raised an interesting point that Moore had worked with the likes of Dak Prescott in Dallas, Justin Herbert in Los Angeles, and even Jalen Hurts in Philadelphia, where he used a variety of offensive schemes to fit his quarterback’s abilities. While Prescott is more of a pocket passer, Hurts has a superior run game as well.

“I think my skill set would be more comparable to Herbert’s and Dak’s and then continuing to grow even with some RPO and utilizing the quarterback in the run game with Jaylen (Hurts), and I think he saw the importance of that and just in general having that strong run game.”

With training camp just having started, there will be plenty of time for Shough and the Saints to understand the type of offense Moore wants to run in New Orleans. For now, though, Shough acknowledges that many things are in the works and that the offense could change from week to week.

“So I think it’s going to be a little bit of everything. I think we have the ability to do a lot of different things. I also don’t know what it’s exactly going to look like. It’s going to change every single week.”

An interesting fact was also presented where Kimes had tweeted out earlier that the Saints had three of the top five receivers in “burst” last season (Chris Olave, Rasheed Shaheed, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling).

While Valdes-Scantling has moved on to Seattle, New Orleans has acquired another speedster in Brandin Cooks. It will be very interesting to see how the Saints offense looks this season with many options schematically.
