Giants Settle Starting Quarterback Conundrum – but Is It the Right Call?

Football action is not too far away now. While the new season is still some days down the road, NFL training camps have gotten underway, and preseason will follow soon.

This time of the year is when teams evaluate their players and their schemes to get a better idea of what to expect in the upcoming season. Generally, each team will have certain position groups fighting it out in training camp and preseason to earn the starting role. In the case of the New York Giants, the quarterback position seemed to be up for grabs, but the organization has already made a decision.

As NFL training camps kick into higher gear with each passing day, more and more news breaks out through the media interviews. One of the latest bits of information from the Giants presser was the revelation of Russell Wilson as their starter under center.

The Giants seem to be prioritizing veteran experience and leadership over youth despite the fact that there is still time to see how the quarterback room develops over the upcoming few weeks.

Currently, the Giants have four signal callers on their roster, with Wilson and Jameis Winston leading the group, followed by rookie Jaxson Dart and Tommy DeVito taking up the fourth place on the depth chart.

Is Wilson Still the Man for the Job?

Now that New York is going with Wilson as its starter, the main question that arises is whether or not he is the right one to lead the team. In Wilson and Winston, the Giants have two veterans, while Dart is the upcoming younger talent.

Last year Wilson missed the first 6 games of the season due to a calf injury. After resuming as the starter from week 7, he led the team to four straight wins, but then ended up going 2-5 in the final stretch. Furthermore, the loss in the Wild Card round against the Ravens meant Pittsburgh was almost definitely going to look elsewhere.

But it’s not just last season. Wilson has now had 4 consecutive seasons of underachieving, starting from 2021 in Seattle, to the 2022 and 2023 campaigns in Denver, and culminating in Pittsburgh in 2024.

During this time, not only has his production dropped significantly, but his overall play has been poor. At one point in his career, he had a consistent passer rating of well over 100, but that has not been the case recently. His touchdowns and passing yards have also taken a hit.

Perhaps the Giants’ rookie, Dart, is not yet ready to step into the starting role. He may require more time, and sitting behind veterans could only be a good thing. But, can Wilson really roll back the years and make a fresh start in the Big Apple?
