Asa Newell
Asa Christian Newell was born on October 5, 2005, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He is 2.08 meters tall and weighs 100 kg, although some sources list his weight as 93 kg. His hometown is Destin, Florida. He attended Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida. His parents are Justin Newell and Carmen Mitchell-Newell, and he intends to major in Communications.
Newell played college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2024 to 2025. He was a consensus five-star recruit and ranked as the 11th recruit in the Class of 2024 by On3.com sports. He made his debut for the Georgia Bulldogs on November 4, 2024, recording 26 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks in an 83-78 victory over Tennessee Tech. During his college career, he was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2025.
In the 2025 NBA draft, Newell was a first-round pick, 23rd overall. While one source indicates he was drafted by the Indiana Pacers, another more recent Wikipedia source lists him as drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans. He currently plays as a power forward for the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA, beginning his professional career in 2025.
Newell also represented the USA in international competitions. At the 2022 FIBA U17 World Cup, he averaged 5.1 points and 2.9 rebounds, helping the USA secure the Gold Medal in Malaga, Spain. At the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup, he contributed 7.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and a team-high 2.3 blocks per game, as the USA finished in fourth place in Debrecen, Hungary.
