Cooper Flagg, the projected overall first pick of the NBA Draft, reacted as the Dallas Mavericks won the 2025 Draft Lottery. The Duke Blue Devils phenom said that he wasn’t thinking too much about which team will win the lottery, possibly drafting him for the forthcoming 2025-26 season. Notably, the Dallas Mavericks, who finished the recent past season in the tenth spot, had 1.8% odds to land the first overall pick.
Flagg, who wreaked havoc in the collegiate basketball sphere in his sole season, appeared on ESPN and discussed what he is looking forward to through the draft process. The 18-year-old said, “I think for me, I didn’t try and think about it too much. I feel like it was kind of out of my control. So, I’m just kind of going through the process like everybody else and just trying to enjoy every single moment because we only get to do this once.”
Talking about what he is working on to get better for his upcoming journey as an NBA player, Flagg said that it is not one particular thing that he is working on. He added that instead of having one specific aim, he is trying to get better all around. Flagg told the panel,
“For me it’s always about just getting better all around. It’s not one specific thing that I’m looking at. It’s just a collective group of things and just trying to get better every single day.”
Notably, the Mavericks had never won the lottery earlier, and coming off such a rough season, it seemed as if the basketball gods had finally smiled upon them. Considerably, the franchise’s front office, including GM Nico Harrison, were thrilled after winning the lottery.
In a video shared from the conference room, Harrison and other members of the management watched the lottery. As soon as the Mavericks won the lottery, the entire room exploded in celebrations.
The Dallas Mavericks made headlines throughout the season for multiple reasons- From trading Luka Doncic to the LA Lakers to having all their key players injured, and now winning the lottery despite having just 1.8% odds.
Needless to say, the results of the draft lottery left fans as well as NBA players stunned, and they didn’t hold back from sharing their reactions on social media.
The LA Lakers icon LeBron James shared a hilarious reaction to the results, seemingly mocking the lottery system.
Miami Heat forward Kevin Love also shared his reaction. He took to X to say, “I mean come on man”.
Apart from the Mavericks, the teams that had the best chances to win the draft lottery, finished in fifth (Utah Jazz), sixth (Washington Wizards), and fourth (Charlotte Hornets) spots, respectively.
