Multiple Unwanted Records That PSG Set in Club World Cup Final Defeat Against Chelsea

Abhinav Goel

Before the Club World Cup Final, the French champions had conceded only one goal throughout the tournament.

Cole Palmer produced a masterclass to guide Chelsea to a dominant 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the 2025 Club World Cup final. Palmer struck twice in the first half and assisted a brilliant third for Joao Pedro as Enzo Maresca’s side stunned the European champions to lift the coveted trophy.

The Blues took control of the match early on, with Malo Gusto exploiting space behind Nuno Mendes before finding Palmer, who coolly slotted past Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 22nd minute. Palmer then doubled Chelsea’s advantage eight minutes later, with a clever dummy followed by an identical finish from the edge of the area.

Palmer then capped a brilliant half with a defence-splitting pass for Joao Pedro to delicately lob Donnarumma. That goal effectively ending the contest before the break. PSG, who had been lauded by Maresca pre-match as “the best in the world,” struggled to recover thereafter. PSG’s frustrations peaked late on as Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair following a VAR review.

Three Unwanted Records PSG Broke in Final Loss:

PSG’s Knockout Stage Defensive Record Ended Brutally

PSG entered the final having not conceded a single goal in the knockout stages of the tournament. In fact, the French champions had conceded only one goal throughout the tournament prior to the final, which came in the group stage against Botafogo. However, within 55 minutes in the final against Chelsea, PSG were trailing 3-0.

Luis Enrique’s Perfect Final Record Broken:

Before this defeat, Luis Enrique boasted a flawless record of 11 wins in 11 club football finals. Chelsea’s impressive victory marked the first blemish on his remarkable streak of victtories in club football finals.

First 3-0 First-Half Deficit in 137 Games for PSG:

It had been 137 matches since PSG last trailed 3-0 in the first half of any match. The previous occasion came on 11 February 2023, when they fell 3-1 to Monaco, with Wissam Ben Yedder scoring twice and assisting once.
