Morecambe Appoint First Sikh Manager in Professional British Football

Morecambe have made history by appointing Ashvir Singh Johal as their new head coach, making him the first Sikh to manage a professional club in the United Kingdom. His appointment follows the takeover of the club by the Panjab Warriors consortium, who completed the purchase of the Shrimps on Sunday. The move comes after Derek Adams was dismissed on Monday.

The club’s new ownership made Ashvir’s appointment their first major decision since the takeover. Ashvir’s arrival marks a landmark moment not only for Morecambe but also for representation in English football. The young Sikh coach has worked with several respected names in the game and brings a rich coaching background to the National League club.

This will be Ashvir’s first senior managerial role. He has previously coached within Leicester City’s academy, spent time at Wigan under Kolo Toure. Most recently, Ashvir worked alongside Cesc Febregas with Como’s youth team in Italy.

Ashvir Becomes Youngest Manager Across Top Five Tiers of English Football

At just 30 years old, Ashvir also becomes the youngest manager across the top five tiers of English football. Earlier this summer, he became one of the youngest ever recipients of the UEFA Pro Licence. Speaking in his first interview after the appointment, Ashvir expressed pride in becoming the first Sikh manager of a professional club and highlighted his determination to succeed with the Shrimps.

Ashvir said,

“The immediate priority right now is going to be to identify the players that we need in this building to ensure Morecambe Football Club can perform well in the National League.”

His appointment coincides with a new era for Morecambe. The Panjab Warriors’ takeover ended a two-year uncertainty surrounding the club’s ownership. On Monday, staff were paid outstanding June wages, while the National League confirmed Morecambe’s suspension had been lifted.

The club also pledged to settle pending July wages and other debts, including those owed to HMRC, by Wednesday. For English football, Ashvir’s appointment represents a significant step forward in diversity and inclusion at the managerial level.
