Mohamed Salah Eyes Longevity; ‘I Can Play Until 40’ – Says Liverpool Star

After a Record-Breaking Season, Mohamed Salah Says He Still Has Years Left in the Tank.

Mohamed Salah believes he can emulate Cristiano Ronaldo and play at the highest level until the age of 40. He has just completed a stellar season with Liverpool. It saw him sweep major individual awards and commit to a new two-year deal. Before signing the new deal, he was widely linked with a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League.

Rumours along with several reports were doing the rounds that a deal worth over £500 million was on the table. However, Salah chose to remain at Anfield. As per his new deal, he extended his stay with the Reds until 2027 after a record-breaking campaign under new manager Arne Slot.

Mohamed Salah – ‘I Think I Can Play Until 40”

In a recent interview with Egyptian broadcaster ON Sports, Salah said, “I will stop playing when I have that feeling. If you ask me for my opinion, I think I can play until the age of 39 or 40, but if I felt before that I wanted to stop, I would quit. I have achieved a lot of things.”

Salah’s comments come after a successful season in which he scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists. This matched the Premier League record for most goal contributions in a 38-game campaign. His 47 goal involvements equaled tallies by legends Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. Notably, both of them needed 42 matches to reach the same mark.

Still in Touch With Saudi Clubs

Despite staying in England for now, Salah acknowledged that a move to Saudi Arabia was close earlier this year. He said, “My contract was up at Liverpool and I would have gone to Saudi, but we finalised the deal with Liverpool.”

He added, “I still have a good relationship with them and I always stay in contact with them. Yes, we were talking to each other.” Hence, there’s still a chance he could end up at any of the Saudi clubs at a later stage in his life, maybe after his stint at Liverpool ends.

Al Ittihad were among the top clubs courting Salah. They were hoping to set up a high-profile rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League. However, Liverpool were unwilling to part ways with their talisman. Especially after his record-breaking achievements and contribution to their Premier League title winning season.

Salah has now scored 186 Premier League goals for Liverpool and Chelsea combined. He is only one goal behind Andrew Cole on the all-time list. As he is set to turn 33 in June, his focus remains on Anfield. However, it is clear that a future move to the Middle East certainly remains a possibility.
