Mercury vs Fever: Alyssa Thomas Creates History As Phoenix Mercury Take Down Indiana Fever in Blowout Victory

On Thursday, August 7, Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas scripted history as she secured her third consecutive triple-double. She is now the first player in the history of the WNBA to create the record. Thomas achieved the feat during the Mercury’s clash against the Indiana Fever, where the former recorded a 95-60 win. Thomas dropped 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists for the winners. DeWanna Bonner led the team with 23 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.

The Fever, who were without Caitlin Clark for the ninth straight game, were led by Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham dropped 18 points, two rebounds, and two assists for the Fever, while Kelsey Mitchell came up with 12 points, one rebound, and four assists. This was the first time Cunningham visited Phoenix following her offseason trade to the Fever. The Mercury made it a memorable homecoming for Cunningham by showing a tribute video before the game.

However, despite her best effort and shooting 6-of-9 from the field with five threes, Cunningham couldn’t lead her team to the other side of the victory line. The defeat has pushed the Fever’s tally to 17-14 in the ongoing season.

Phoenix Mercury Maintain Dominance Over Fever Right From Beginning

The hosts dominated their rivals right from the beginning, and entered the second quarter with a 26-16 lead. Satou Sabally dropped eight points and two rebounds for the Mercury in the first quarter, and made all three of her shot attempts from the field. Sabally went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. On the other hand, Kelsey Mitchell had eight points, one rebound, and one steal for the Fever. The Mercury continued their dominance in the second quarter, owing to Sabally and Thomas’ contribution.

Both scored 10 points and six rebounds, while Cunningham led the Fever with 12 points. The Mercury entered halftime leading the Fever with 47-36. In the third quarter, Cunningham did her best to get the Fever back into the game, but the hosts were way too dominating. By the end of the third quarter, the Mercury led 73-47, and eventually crushed the Fever 95-60.
