Phoenix Mercury Playoff Chances: Can the Mercury Reach the WNBA Playoffs this Season?

Phoenix Mercury’s winning streak revives postseason push following shaky form

The Phoenix Mercury are one of the top sides this season who have been consistent. Mercury’s latest win came against the equally dominant Indiana Fever and are currently riding on a three game winning streak.

However, they just recovered from a slump of losing five out of seven games since the WNBA All-Star break. Their current resurgence shows that they can withhold the Monday blues and still make a comeback.

The reasons behind Phoenix Mercury’s slump were primarily linked to inconsistent defensive execution during their road games. The transition defense leaked points, and second chance control went loose. This provided their opponents with an open window to exploit gaps and create momentum-shifting scoring opportunities. The 107 points conceded against the Indiana Fever were the highest.

This could be a problem that gets enlarged as the season gets narrower. Kahleah Cooper’s early injury hurt the roster, but her return has also brought inconsistency in the backcourt unit. Shot creation and 3-point reliability went down before the recent uptick.

Phoenix Mercury Thriving under Thomas Leadership

On the other hand, Alyssa Thomas is leading the resurgence. She etched her name in the history books with three consecutive triple doubles. Phoenix has to make sure to consistently build their offensive tactics around the in-form Alyssa Thomas.

Thomas and Sabally have also formed a frontcourt pairing that has overwhelmed slower units on second-chance plays and matchups. And continuing to target those advantages keeps the floor balanced and prevents opponent runs.

Talking about Phoenix Mercury’s playoff chances, they’re sky-high. As of early August, ESPN’s Basketball Power Index pegged the Mercury at 99.6% to reach the postseason. With the current projections, they are likely to finish as a top-3 seed.

This would also give them home court advantage going into the knockout phase. And home court matters more this year. The first round is best-of-three, with the higher seed hosting game 1 and 3. This would be a big incentive for the Phoenix Mercury given their strong home form.
