Will Brittney Griner get suspended from the WNBA?

Atlanta Dream center Brittney Griner is not someone who is unfamiliar with controversies. Griner has been a part of the WNBA since 2013, and ever since, she has received multiple suspensions in the league. In 2015, she and her then-wife, Glory Johnson, were suspended for seven games each following their domestic violence arrest. Later in 2019, Griner received another three-game suspension. The 34-year-old has found herself in hot waters over and over again, and this time is nothing new!

During the Dream’s recent clash with the Wings, Griner was ejected from the court. The 34-year-old engaged in a heated confrontation with referee Angelica Suffern during the third quarter. The ten-time WNBA All-Star got upset over a foul call while battling for a rebound with Haley Jones. She then started arguing with the referee and was given a technical foul.

As she pleaded for her case, Griner came close to making contact with the official, and in doing so, she was assessed a second technical foul and got ejected. Though Griner’s ejection didn’t affect the Dream, as they went on to register an 88-85 win over the Wings. However, it led to speculations that she would face suspension. Is it true? Let’s find out.

Was Brittney Gear Suspended from WNBA?

There have been talks that the league would review the incident involving Griner and the official. While nothing is confirmed now, there are chances that she might face penalties, including a fine or suspension. The rules for the WNBA aren’t as clear as compared to other leagues. Generally, putting hands on the official would automatically lead to disciplinary action.

According to the official rule book, “any additional unsportsmanlike conduct shall be reported by datagram immediately to the Operations Department.” Hence, it is possible that she might face suspension for a few games.
