Season Recap 2024

The 2024 Formula 1 season was better for Mercedes considering their progress. The Brackley based outfit was struggling since the start of the new Formula 1 regulations. Although, in 2024 Mercedes was able to get back to winning ways again with both of their drivers winning multiple races. Although Mercedes lost Lewis Hamilton, they managed to find an equally competent driver in George Russell. The 2024 season was a much-needed break for Mercedes and their championship aspirations. The team was a long way from challenging wins consistently but it managed to create a good base for the 2025 season. The 2024 season was arguably the best season for Mercedes after the heartbreak of the 2021 drivers’ championship and the constant failures of the ground effects era.

History

Mercedes has been a part of Formula 1 one since 1954. The team has a racing license of Germany and has been present in Formula 1 as an engine manufacturer and owner on different occasions. Mercedes was able to return to Formula 1 grid as an owner after taking up a 45% stake in the Brawn GP Formula 1 Team. The 2010 Formula 1 season saw the return of Silver Arrows with Niki Lauda leading the team and Michael Schumacher driving their car. They recruited Lewis Hamilton in 2013 to start one of the most dominant eras of Formula 1 with the turbo-hybrid engines. They won eight consecutive constructor’s championships and seven driver championships from 2014-2021. The Silver Arrows supply engines to the majority of the teams of the current Formula 1 grid which include- McLaren, Williams, Aston Martin.

Predictions for 2025

Mercedes has silently managed to match their pace with the top teams of the grid. However, they have suffered a huge blow to their championship hopes. Indeed, they might have replaced their star driver who went to Italy with a driver who was born in Italy. But a talented lineup is not enough to create a championship winning team. For the 2025 season, Mercedes needs to prioritise helping their younger drivers gain experience with a race winning team and hopefully choose their lead driver for the upcoming championship battles after the regulation changes of 2026.

George Russell is the type of guy to take over the reins of his team after his champion teammate leaves for another constructor. He was able to hit the “T-pose” twice during the 2024 Formula 1 season. Russell joined Mercedes after an incredibly long and difficult spell at Williams. He was able to convert the nightmarish 2022 season for Mercedes into his first victorious season in Formula 1. Russell will undoubtedly be the preference as the lead driver for the 2025 championship. Mr. Consistency will have to fill in the gap left by Lewis Hamilton and prove himself as the number one driver if he does not want to lose to Kimi Antonelli. However, he has shown that he learns from mistakes and in the previous season he was able to perform under pressure. Russell would’ve won three races if not for his disqualification at Spa Francorchamps.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is the most discussed driver on the 2025 Formula 1 grid. He is among the youngest drivers to compete in the Formula 1 championship. Antonelli has been consistently backed by Toto Wolff. According to Wolff, he does not want to commit the same mistake he did after losing Max Verstappen to Red Bull. Initially, Antonelli was about to replace the departing Logan Sargeant at Williams and join the grid in 2024. His move was blocked by Mercedes who wanted Mick Schumacher to rejoin the grid.
