Merab Dvalishvili Opens Up About Facing Umar Nurmagomedov At UFC 311: “He Just Don’t Earn It”

Zaid Quraishi

Merab Dvalishvili openly expresses his thoughts on facing Umar Nurmagomedov, revealing his confidence and readiness for the challenge!

The UFC bantamweight division has always been a shark tank of talented fighters scratching and clawing their way up. For years, Merab Dvalishvili put in the hard work, beating one tough opponent after another. Now that he’s finally captured the crown, ‘The Machine’ isn’t too happy about who is knocking at his door first.

But, the UFC doesn’t care about his likes or dislikes. They believe that Umar Nurmagomedov is the #1 contender, and that is who he is going to face at UFC 311.

Why Is Merab Dvalishvili Not Thrilled To Defend Against Umar Nurmagomedov?

Dvalishvili’s problem with Nurmagomedov stems from his alleged fast-tracking to the title shot.  While most fighters have to string together multiple wins against ranked opponents, Umar Nurmagomedov seemingly jumped the line after his victory over Cory Sandhagen.

In an interview with Megan Olivi, Merab Dvalishvili didn’t hold back his feelings about facing Umar Nurmagomedov. The Georgian champion, known for his relentless cardio and wrestling, pointed out how his path to the title differed from Nurmagomedov’s fast track.

Yeah, he fought only [Cory] Sandhagen, no wrestling, and I guess he’s using this excuse. He beat number two [ranked] guy, and now he’s here. It’s a big challenge but I just only what I hate, he just don’t earn it like how we are, UFC fighters should earn it. He just cocky, he should be humble.”

The tension between these two has been brewing for a while, reaching a boiling point during UFC 310 fight week. Their press conference turned into quite the show, with both men nearly coming to blows backstage.

Despite his frustrations with Nurmagomedov’s rapid rise, Dvalishvili isn’t taking this fight lightly. He acknowledges that the undefeated Dagestani presents a serious challenge. ‘The Machine’ aims to hand Nurmagomedov his first loss, but he is realistic about the task ahead.

What really seems to get under Dvalishvili’s skin is his challenger’s cockiness. Coming from Dvalishvili, who built his career on hard work and perseverance, these words carry extra weight. The champion’s message is clear: in the UFC, respect should be earned through consistent performance, not just a famous last name and one big win.
