Berrettini and Fearnley Square Off in Rome
The 29th-seeded Matteo Berrettini will kick off his Italian Open campaign this Saturday against the Brit Jacob Fearnley in the second round. Berrettini received a first-round bye, while Fearnley advanced by taking down wild card Fabio Fognini in commanding straight sets.
The Italian’s 2025 season has been a rollercoaster. He has had deep runs with no titles, and the lows have stayed low. After early exits in Melbourne and Rotterdam, he found some rhythm with back-to-back quarterfinals in Qatar and Dubai. A gritty straight-sets win over Novak Djokovic, featuring a tiebreaker in the opener, stood out in Doha.
He backed it up with a quarterfinal in Miami, losing to Taylor Fritz in three sets. In Monte Carlo, he upset world No. 2 Alexander Zverev before falling to Lorenzo Musetti in the round of 16. Just as momentum was building, Madrid dealt a blow. He retired from his round of 32 clash with Jack Draper due to an abdominal injury.

Across the net, 23-year-old Brit Jacob Fearnley is still finding his footing on the ATP main tour. He opened strong with a semifinal in Canberra and a third-round showing at the Australian Open. Since then, results have been uneven. He suffered a first-round loss at Indian Wells and a round of 32 defeat against Grigor Dimitrov in Madrid. The upside is clear, but consistency is still a missing piece.
Matteo Berrettini and Jacob Fearnley do not have a head-to-head yet. This match at the 2025 Italian Open will be their first meeting ever.
| Matteo Berrettini | Category | Jacob Fearnley |
| 30 | Ranking | 57 |
| 200-107 | Career W-L | 9-9 |
| 12-9 | YTD W-L | 7-6 |
| 10 | Career Titles | 0 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 0 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Berrettini holds the edge with his experience and big-match pedigree, especially in front of a home crowd. But if Fearnley finds an early rhythm and keeps his nerves in check, this could turn into a testing opener for the Italian.
Prediction: Matteo Berrettini in straight sets.
Here are the betting odds according to BetMGM:
Matteo Berrettini: 3/10
Jacob Fearnley: 5/2
