Mason Mount Reveals Manchester United’s Target for Upcoming Premier League Season

Mason Mount is determined to turn a new page after a “hurtful” season at Manchester United. The midfielder endured an injury-disrupted campaign last season. However, the England international said that he and his teammates are motivated to respond after the Red Devils’s worst-ever Premier League finish.

United slumped to 15th place last season, their lowest league finish since the relegation year of 1974. They also fell short in the Europa League final, losing to Tottenham, a result that confirmed their absence from European football for the upcoming season.

Mount joined from Chelsea in a £60 million deal two years ago. He was sidelined for four months due to injury but returned late in the season. Despite United spending over £125 million on forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the 25-year-old said that he’s ready to fight for his place and lead by example in a new-look squad.

While Ruben Amorim’s summer transfer activity has focused on strengthening the attack, Mount remains confident in his own role. Mount said,

“When you’re at a club like Manchester United, there has to be that competition there to perform and as a group we want to win and we’re all in that together. The new lads who have come in have been brilliant in training so far and the first couple of weeks is never easy. It’s about integrating them into the group and making them feel as comfortable as possible and I think we’ve all done that.”

Mason Mount Reveals Manchester United’s Target

As part of their Premier League Summer Series, United are currently in the United States, where they’ll face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton in pre-season action. Meanwhile, the fringe players at the club like Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia, and Alejandro Garnacho continue training back at Carrington.

While expectations at Old Trafford are always high, Mount was candid when asked about the club’s targets for the new campaign. The former Chelsea player revealed that the first objective this season is to get Manchester United back into European competition. He said,

“Europe is a massive, massive thing for us. The Champions League would be amazing, but I’d say Europe. I think that’s the focus.”

The 2025–26 campaign marks just the second time in four decades that United won’t feature in any European competition. Closing a 23-point gap to last season’s seventh-placed Nottingham Forest will now be top priority for Ruben Amorim.
