Manchester United Complete £71M Signing of Bryan Mbeumo From Brentford

Mbeumo becomes United's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and left-back Diego Leon.

Manchester United have completed the signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo in a deal worth up to £71m. The Cameroon international has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further 12 months. Mbeumo’s arrival ends a transfer saga that stretched for over seven weeks.

United’s initial offer of £55m plus £7.5m in add-ons was rejected last month by Brentford, but the Red Devils returned with an improved offer to get the deal over the line. The 25-year-old has been registered in time to join United’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, with the team scheduled to fly out on Tuesday.

Mbeumo Preferred United Over Spurs

Before United stepped up their pursuit, Tottenham had also been in discussions with Brentford. Former Bees boss Thomas Frank was keen to reunite with the forward in north London. However, Mbeumo made it clear that Old Trafford was his preferred destination despite having two years left on his contract at Brentford. Mbeumo will wear the number 19 shirt at United.

United had been exploring multiple striker options this summer. Their targets included Ollie Watkins, Viktor Gyokeres and Nicolas Jackson. But it was Mbeumo who fit the profile best for manager Ruben Amorim. Notably, Mbeumo becomes Amorim’s third signing of the summer. He follows the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and left-back Diego Leon.

Following the completion of his transfer, Mbeumo said,

“As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up. My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

A Record Departure for Brentford

Mbeumo’s transfer smashes Brentford’s previous record sale. The Bees sold Ivan Toney to Al-Ahli for £40m last summer. Since joining from Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo scored 70 goals and provided 51 assists in 242 appearances for Brentford. His 2024-25 Premier League campaign was his best yet, with 20 goals and seven assists.

He also posted career-best numbers across different attacking stats like chances created, touches inside the box, and shot conversion rate. At 23.53%, only Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak were more clinical than Mbeumo in front of goal last season.
