USMNT Star Gio Reyna Close to Joining Serie A Side

Gio Reyna joined Dortmund as a highly-rated prospect but he has struggled for consistency due to injuries.

Gio Reyna looks set to end his time with Borussia Dortmund as a move to Italy edges closer. Reports from football journalist Fabrizio Romano suggest that Serie A side Parma are in advanced talks for the American international. Notably, Reyna has already agreed personal terms with Parma, with only the transfer fee now being finalized between the two clubs.

The fee is expected to be around €7 million. If completed, the move would bring an end to Reyna’s injury-plagued spell in Germany and offer him a fresh opportunity in Italy’s top flight.

Parma, owned by American businessman Kyle Krause, are targeting a revival under newly appointed head coach Carlos Cuesta. Cuesta was formerly part of Mikel Arteta’s staff at Arsenal. At just 29, Cuesta is the youngest head coach in Europe’s top leagues.

For Reyna, Parma offers a chance to play a leading role ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States. In his club career so far, Reyna has recorded 27 goals and 28 assists in 173 appearances. For the USMNT national team, he has eight goals in 32 caps. The deal is not yet finalized, but discussions are progressing positively, with reports suggesting an agreement around €6-7 million is close.

Reyna’s Dortmund Career

Reyna joined Dortmund as a highly-rated prospect but he struggled for consistency. While there were flashes of brilliance, injuries and competition for places often limited his role. His most productive spell came in the 2022-23 season when he scored seven goals in just 625 Bundesliga minutes.

However, the last two seasons have been disappointing. A groin injury picked up on USMNT duty in late 2024 sidelined Reyna for eight Bundesliga matches. Upon his return, he failed to break back into the Dortmund starting eleven. With his path to the first team blocked, both player and club agreed it was time to move on.

Over the past two seasond, Reyna managed only 49 appearances across all competitions, with just two goals and a couple of assists to his name. A half-season loan at Nottingham Forest last year did little to revive his fortunes, as he failed to secure a regular starting spot. As a result, Reyna is now seeking a new challenge.
