Manchester City’s Trophy Hopes Take a Hit As Erling Haaland Is Set To Miss Most of the Final Part of the Season Due to Injury

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury during the FA Cup quarter-final victory over Bournemouth. The prolific Norwegian had just netted his 30th goal of the season before being forced off the pitch following a heavy challenge from Bournemouth midfielder Lewis Cook.

The 24-year-old underwent scans on Monday and Manchester City confirmed that Haaland will now consult with a specialist to assess the full extent of the damage. The reigning Premier League champions did not provide a timescale for the player’s return.

“Erling underwent initial tests in Manchester on Monday morning and will now seek specialist consultation to confirm the full extent of the injury.”

How Long Is Erling Haaland Expected To be Sidelined?

While Haaland will miss the remainder of the Premier League season and the FA Cup, Manchester City is hopeful that he will play a part in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, which is set to be held in June.

“The expectation is that Erling will be fit in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season, including this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup,” said a club statement.

Haaland’s injury comes at a critical stage of the season. Currently fifth in the Premier League, City will be looking for a top-four finish to secure Champions League qualification. Additionally, City are preparing for their FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest. The Norwegian forward has been one of City’s standout performers this season with 30 goals across all competitions.

Pep Guardiola will be forced to adjust his attacking lineup in the coming weeks. The City manager will rely more heavily on Egyptian striker Omar Marmoush in Haaland’s absence. Notably, Marmoush made an immediate impact after coming off the bench against Bournemouth. The Egyptian found the back of the net with a low drive to help Manchester City secure a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth and book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals.
