Manchester United return to European action this Thursday as they travel to France to face Lyon in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final at the Groupama Stadium. With their domestic campaign marred by inconsistency, the Red Devils will be hoping to salvage their season with a strong run in Europe. Manchester United remain the only unbeaten side in this season’s Europa League, boasting a record of six wins and four draws. United comfortably dispatched Real Sociedad with a 5-2 aggregate scoreline, with captain Bruno Fernandes netting a superb hat-trick.

On the other hand, Lyon come into the tie in good form after a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Lille in Ligue 1. Lyon cruised through their last-16 tie in dominant fashion, dismantling FCSB 7-1 on aggregate. Under Paulo Fonseca, the French side has shown resilience, and they’ll be looking to gain an edge before heading to Old Trafford for the return leg.

Lyon Injury News

Lyon have been dealt a significant injury setback ahead of Thursday’s clash, with winger Ernest Nuamah ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an ACL injury during last weekend’s win over Lille. The French side will also be without Malick Fofana, who is sidelined with a knee issue.

Nuamah’s absence opens the door for highly-rated forward Rayan Cherki. Cherki has been in outstanding form this season, scoring nine goals and getting 18 assists in 36 appearances this season. Only three players from Europe’s top five leagues – Bruno Fernandes (129), Raphinha (122) and Joshua Kimmich (113) – have created more than Cherki’s 103 chances in all competitions this season. He’s expected to line up alongside Thiago Almada and Alexandre Lacazette in attack.
