Will Musetti's injury play any part in his first round match against Basilashvili?
Day 2 of the Wimbledon Championships continues with more first-round action. The first day of play, yesterday, saw plenty of exciting matches and even some surprising exits.
Today, the number seven seed Lorenzo Musetti begins his quest at SW19 against qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili on court number 2. The winner of this match will go on to play either Jaime Faria or Lorenzo Sonego.
The number seven seed, Musetti, is entering Wimbledon in rich form. The past couple of months have been extremely good for the Italian as he reached the Monte Carlo final, and followed that up with three consecutive semi-final appearances in Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros.

Lorenzo reaches his 2nd Slam QF.
Time and time again this year, he keeps proving that he belongs at the very top, competing for the biggest titles.
His hard work these last few years is no longer just hard work.

However, that was clay, and Musetti is a dominant player on that surface. Having said that, the Italian’s game is also adept on grass as he did reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2024. Although Musetti didn’t play in any tune-up events prior to Wimbledon this year, his overall record on grass stands at 18-10.
Veteran player Nikoloz Basilashvili hasn’t featured in too many matches at the highest level this year, failing to come through the qualifying rounds on most occasions.
Prior to Wimbledon, the Georgian player participated in the Boss Open and the Hall Open, but there he couldn’t enter the main draw. However, he has recorded three consecutive victories in the qualifying rounds, which will give him some confidence heading into this match.
Lorenzo Musetti and Nikoloz Basilashvili have met twice on tour at this level before today’s match. The current head-to-head stands at 1-1. Both matches were played in 2022, with Basilashvili winning the first one in Stuttgart and Musetti the second at the ATP Masters 1000 in Paris.
It is important to note that the Stuttgart match was played indoors on grass, and Basilashvili recorded a straight-sets victory.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | ATP Masters 1000 Paris | Round of 32 | Lorenzo Musetti | 6-4, 6-2 |
| 2022 | Stuttgart | Round of 32 | Nikoloz Basilashvili | 7-5, 6-3 |
| Lorenzo Musetti | Category | Nikoloz Basilashvili |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | Ranking | 126 |
| 157-119 | Career W-L | 148-176 |
| 25-8 | YTD W-L | 2-4 |
| 2 | Career Titles | 5 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |

Basilashvili is known for his powerful game, which suits this surface quite well. However, it is his inconsistency in performing in the main draw that limits his chances. He has the game to trouble most players, but he will need to limit his errors and take the game to the Italian.
Musetti is currently in superb form, and his game is suitable on grass as well. Transitioning from clay should not pose much of a problem. Basilashvili could take a set off Musetti, but it’s difficult to see him progressing to the next round unless the Italian’s recent injury slows him down.
