Following their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, Southampton suffered what was the fastest relegation in the Premier League history with seven games to go. Winning only two games from their 31 games, the Saints are now destined to drop down from the English top flight.

Winning one of their last 10 fixtures, Southampton’s campaign went from bad to worse. Manager Ivan Jurić who took over from Russell Martin in December has failed to deliver. The Saints’ relegation came just one season after being promoted.

Fastest Relegations In the Premier League History

Crossing the tally of Derby County from the 2007/08 season, Southampton registered a record that’s going to hurt on the charts. Here’s a table of the top five fastest relegations in Premier League history, ranked by how many games were left when relegation was confirmed:

Derby County finished their 2007 season with 11 points in their relegation. The Saints currently have 10 points with 31 matches played. Having one victory on the road and one at home, Jurić’s team has not had any home advantage either.

Be Grateful Of The Fans Said Southampton Manager Ivan Jurić

Following their relegation, Croatian manager Jurić expressed surprise at how the fans took the news. Addressing his message to the players he mentioned asking players to be grateful to these fans. Speaking after their defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, Jurić told Sky Sports:

“For me, it’s something completely new, a new experience. I said to the players that they have to be thankful that they have fans like this. It was incredible, the way they love their team, their squad.”

Southampton fans appeared to be encouraging their squad following a disappointing season. Jurić who mentioned being in awe was grateful to the fans as the 49-year-old continued:

“Even the players that we have been relegated with, it’s incredible for me, incredible. I think the fans deserve much more.”

“Every person who works at Southampton has to do it better and create something much stronger than we created this year.

Southampton after being a regular in the Premier League since 2015 has a lot to worry about. After being relegated twice in three seasons, the Saints will again compete in the Championship next season.

With their current goal to be not the worst side in the Premier League history, Southampton still can’t escape pressure. Managing two points could come hard for the Saints as they play Aston Villa and West Ham United next.
