The 2025 NFL preseason got underway last night as the Detroit Lions went up against the Los Angeles Chargers in the annual Hall of Fame game. With that, it brought an end to nearly 5 months of no football action.

Although the results of these games are to be taken with a pinch of salt, the reality of it was that the Chargers ran riot over the Lions to the tune of 34-7. Los Angeles jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Here are some of the main takeaways from the 2025 Hall of Fame game.

Trey Lance Looked Like a Completely Different Player

To start things off, Jim Harbaugh gave the keys to his offense to Trey Lance as he said he would do. Lance, who was drafted number 3 overall in the 2021 draft, has had a horrendous time in the league since then.

Relegated to third on the depth chart, Lance took full advantage of the opportunity as he finished the game with a stat line that read 13 of 20 completions for 120 passing yards, including 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had a couple of nice completions, including the first touchdown pass to tight end Will Dissly during a fourth-and-goal.

Nikko Reed Continued Sublime Training Camp Form

Undrafted free agent cornerback from this year’s draft, Nikko Reed, showed that it’s not just in practice where he can excel. The youngster who has been a dynamite during the Chargers’ training camp brought the same energy on the field against the Lions, picking off Lions’ quarterback Kyle Allen for an interception early in the game.

Reed has been hailed as one of the best performers during training camp with a couple of interceptions, including a pick-six recently. He is also averaging at least one pass deflection every day.

Virtual First Down Measurement System Makes Debut

The virtual first-down measuring system made its preseason debut in the game. While the chain gang will still remain as backup, the league is slowly gravitating towards the virtual system as technological advancements continue to empower the NFL.

Powered by Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology, the system boasts six 8K cameras that will determine the ball’s position on the field. The line judges will still be responsible for spotting the ball and deciding on the first down, but this use of technological advancement will be used in a bid to save time.

Backup Quarterbacks Could Pose Big Questions for the Lions

The Lions are a formidable team when all their starters are clicking. They will once again be considered among the favorites to make a deep playoff run once the season starts in September.

However, the backup quarterbacks could be an issue for Dan Campbell’s side as neither of the two between Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker, showed anything positive. Allen went 9/14 for 91 yards, but threw 2 picks and no touchdowns, while Hooker went 3/6 for 18 yards and an interception.

In the event that Detroit needs to take Goff off the field, placing trust in either of these two seems difficult. On the bright side of things, they still have 3 more games to prove themselves, but if there is no improvement, things are looking bleak.

Isaac TeSlaa Looks Destined for a good rookie season

Lions’ third-round pick, wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa, continued to show his mettle doing what he does best. The wideout has garnered plenty of attention in the Lions’ training camp, hauling in difficult catches on a consistent basis.

In the preseason opener, TeSlaa secured two receptions in the first half, both of which were 20+ yard gains. He finished the half with 2 catches for 26 yards, and now looks capable of having an excellent rookie campaign.

The Hall of Fame game was just the first warm-up game of the season for both teams. With most of the starters not even taking the field, it is too difficult to predict anything at this point. The only plus point for the Chargers is that they head back in a positive frame of mind, while the Lions will look to address their slip-ups quickly.
