Boulter vs Pavlyuchenkova: Italian Open 2025 First-Round Preview
Katie Boulter will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round of the 2025 WTA Italian Open. Boulter, currently ranked No. 40, has struggled for consistency this season. After an early second-round exit in Melbourne, she has yet to make it past the Round of 32 in any event.
However, a foot injury sidelined Boulter for both Qatar and Dubai. She made her return at Indian Wells, only to be ousted by Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the second round. More recently, Peyton Stearns handed Boulter a first-round defeat at the Miami Open, followed by Jasmine Paolini beating her in straight sets in the second round at Madrid.
On the other hand, Pavlyuchenkova began strong in Melbourne, reaching the quarterfinals with victories over Anastasia Potapova and Donna Vekic. However, she fell to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling three-set match. Since then, Pavlyuchenkova has struggled to find form, failing to make it past the Round of 16 with early exits in both Miami and Madrid.

Boulter secured her first clay-court victory in the WTA opening round of the 2025 Madrid Open, defeating Katerina Siniakova. Although still refining her clay-court game, Boulter showed promising progress. In contrast, Pavlyuchenkova has a more established and successful history on the surface, winning 3 of 12 career titles on clay. The Russian also reached the 2021 French Open final, where she fell to Barbora Krejcikova in a three-set battle.

Given her superior surface record and overall experience, Pavlyuchenkova seems to hold the edge in this matchup. While neither player has had an outstanding season so far, the Russian’s advantage on clay could prove pivotal.
