‘I Found Myself in My Closet Crying’ – Justin Fields Shares Emotional Turmoil of the Past Week Following Jets’ First Win of the Season

The New York Jets entered their week 8 game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a 0-7 record, being the only team to have yet won a game this season. All that changed, however, after Justin Fields led the team to a 23-point fourth-quarter comeback win as the Jets downed the Bengals 39-38.

The win, which now puts the Jets at 1-7, is too little too late to salvage their season, but a win is a win, especially for a first-time head coach in Aaron Glenn and his quarterback Justin Fields, who has been subject to severe criticism even at the hands of franchise owner Woody Johnson.

Jets’ Owner’s Criticism of Justin Fields

This past week, during the NFL team owners’ fall meeting on October 21 and 22, the New York Jets’ owner, Woody Johnson, placed complete faith in head coach Aaron Glenn despite the team’s tough start.

At the same time, Johnson was highly critical of the franchise’s starting quarterback, Justin Fields, for his overall play and lack of success. The Jets’ owner basically put the team’s failures squarely on the shoulders of Fields as he told the media that it is hard to find success in this league when you have a quarterback with such a poor rating.

Johnson also said that while Fields has the ability, something is missing, and the lack of consistency on his part is preventing the team from attaining the desired outcomes.

"It is impossible to overcome dysfunctional ownership. … Maybe the problem is you, Woody."

Fields Opens Up about Tough Week

After the Jets win over the Bengals yesterday, a visibly emotional Fields spoke to the media, letting his heart do the talking when asked how this past week was for him. The former Steelers’ signal caller discussed how emotional the week was, while also acknowledging the fact that he even cried, not because of all the distress, but more so for the unwavering faith in God.

“It’s been a lot of, you know, it’s been a lot for me. Emotionally, spiritually, when I was out on the field, I was damn near about to start crying,” Said Fields. “But not because of we won, but just because of the goodness of God and just how everything, you know, worked for the greater good.”

The fifth-year quarterback also acknowledged the support he received from his teammates and family members, while also recounting the importance of faith and thanking God for Sunday’s success.

“Everything that I’ve been through this past week, everything that we’ve been through as a team these past seven weeks. It was a lot of ups and downs,” Continued Fields. “I got a lot of support (from) my teammates, from my brothers, from my family, from my friends, and most of all, I’m just thankful. Thankful for the Lord that he blessed me. I’m praying like crazy just for a win.”

“I’m going to get pretty vulnerable right here, but this week I found myself in my closet crying on the ground laying down. Not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles. I felt like I was built to handle that, and I was put in place to handle this situation. But in that moment I just had gotten a text from my sister and my stepmom, and it was just an encouraging text, just keep going and keep spreading the faith.”

I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate and respect Jets QB Justin Fields for opening up like this. Not an easy thing to do, and it’s 10x more challenging as a professional athlete:

Now, with their first win under their belt, it will be interesting to see how the Jets move forward with upcoming games against the Browns, Patriots, and Ravens. More importantly, it will be worth keeping an eye on Fields to see how much confidence he can take from the recent win into the upcoming weeks.
