Meanwhile, Tom Aspinall has been making waves, ‘defending’ the interim belt with a stunning victory over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 and demanding his shot at unifying the titles.

Things started heating up when rumors circulated about Jones demanding $30 million for the Aspinall fight. However, Joe Rogan quickly shot down that gossip, revealing that Dana White personally contacted him to confirm it was fake news. But now, the UFC boss himself is running out of patience, and it is glaringly obvious in his recent statements.

Dana White’s Ultimatum

UFC CEO Dana White isn’t playing games anymore. He has made it crystal clear: if Jones doesn’t step up to fight Aspinall by mid-2025, he will be stripped of the heavyweight title. This is what he said in an interview with The Mac Life:

“100%. Listen, if we don’t get the fight done, we move on and we make another fight. But, the night before, I was up in my room with my people till like, six in the morning. We’re working on lots of stuff right now. There’s lots of really good sh*t going on right now,”

That’s a “100 percent” guarantee from the boss himself. Working those late-night deals until 6 AM, White seems determined to make this happen – or move on entirely and get new stars in the recently stagnant heavyweight division.

What’s At Stake For Jones And Aspinall?

For Jon Jones, this fight represents more than just another defense. At 37, with a legacy as arguably the greatest of all time (GOAT), he needs to prove he can handle the new breed of heavyweight. Tom Aspinall, younger and explosively talented, presents a unique challenge that could either cement Jones’ legacy or signal a changing of the guard.

And if this fight fails to materialize, there will always be a mark on Jon Jones’ legacy, that he refused to fight Tom Aspinall. This fight is a must for both fighters, especially ‘Bones,’ given his status as someone who will fight anyone, anywhere (except maybe Chael Sonnen on short notice!)

Dana White has always been one of the biggest supporters of Jon Jones’ GOAT status. He defended Jones against accusations of ducking fights. But the clock is ticking and the UFC’s patience isn’t endless. Remember how the UFC stripped their money minting machine Conor McGregor when he wouldn’t defend his titles? They’re not afraid to make tough calls.

Tom Aspinall’s interim championship gives them leverage they didn’t have before. Moreover, he is becoming a legit star and a fan favourite with each fight that happens. His fights are exciting and have yet to see the bell of the second round!

While Jones has earned his status as one of the sport’s greatest champions, the UFC’s “show up or get out” policy remains unchanged. The ball is in Jon Jones’ court now, but that court might have an expiration date stamped on it.
