Two division champion Jon Jones shares his emotional heartfelt message detailing his retirement from the sport !
Few fighters, not just in UFC, but in the entire MMA scene have embodied the duality of between triumph and tragedy quite like Jon Jones. His career is a mix of championship belts and courtroom appearances sharing equal billing. For over a decade, ‘Bones’ has been the sport’s most talented yet troubled superstar. He is a man whose incredible athletic gifts have been consistently overshadowed by personal demons and legal troubles that seemed to follow him like a persistent shadow.
The announcement everyone knew would come eventually finally arrived on social media. It was delivered with the kind of emotional weight that only comes from someone who has lived through the highest highs and lowest lows imaginable. Jones took to X with a lengthy message that felt more like a confession. He thanked everyone from Dana White to God himself for the wild ride that has been his UFC career.
After Dana White announced Jon Jones’ retirement at the UFC Baku post fight press conference, Jones made his own announcement. These words came from someone who understands that greatness often comes at a cost.
“Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC. This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years…I want to thank the UFC, Dana, Hunter, Lorenzo, God, my family, coaches, teammates, and all the fans who have stood by me through every chapter…As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead. MMA will always be a part of who I am…Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey with me. The best is yet to come.”

From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to…
Jon Jones’ retirement leaves the sport without its most compelling figure. He was someone who could generate more interest in a press conference than most fighters could in actual fights. Love him or hate him, Jones made people care, and that kind of magnetic presence doesn’t come around often in any sport.
Jon Jones demolished every record and expectation along the way. He won the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship at just 23 years old and became the youngest champion in UFC history. That March night in 2011 against Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua wasn’t just a changing of the guard; it was the beginning of one of the most dominant championship runs in combat sports history.

The numbers tell only part of the story, but they are staggering nonetheless. Jones defended his light heavyweight title 11 times across two separate reigns. And he faced and defeating a who’s who of legendary fighters. He dismantled former champions like Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson, and Rashad Evans. His reach advantage and unorthodox striking created problems that opponents simply couldn’t solve. And his wrestling background allowed him to dictate where fights took place.
Standing 6’4″ with an 84.5-inch reach, he possessed the kind of frame that forced opponents to fight his fight whether they wanted to or not. His elbows became legendary weapons and his ground-and-pound was devastating. His ability to adapt mid-fight separated him from merely good fighters. The way he picked apart Daniel Cormier twice, survived early trouble against Alexander Gustafsson, and systematically broke down legends like Glover Teixeira showcased a fighter who combined natural talent with an almost supernatural fight IQ.

His move to heavyweight only added another chapter to an already incredible story. At UFC 285, Jones submitted Ciryl Gane to capture the vacant heavyweight title. This proved that his skills translated perfectly to the division’s bigger stage. His final fight at UFC 309 saw him successfully defend that title against Stipe Miocic, arguably the greatest heavyweight in UFC history. This performance reminded everyone why he’s considered the greatest of all time by many.

mma I am a dedicated MMA and Boxing content writer at The Playoffs. I was instantly hooked on MMA after watching the fight between Lyoto Machida vs. Gegard Mousasi back in 2014, and since then, i have been an avid writer with a deep love for the sport and its techniques, providing readers with a thorough understanding of the sport. My favorite aspect of working at The Playoffs is the creative freedom it provides. The diverse range of topics, from listicles and SEO to news articles, keeps me engaged and motivates me to continuously improve my skills! I aim to capture the excitement of the combat sports world in my writing, acting as the middleman between fighters and their die-hard fans. It is kind of like a referee, but with words!
