Joao Fonseca looking to earn his best result at a Grand Slam with a win today!

Day 5 at the French Open gives us a second round clash between an up and coming 18-year-old Joao Fonseca against the veteran 34-year-old Pierre-Hugues Herbert in what should be a classic.

The Brazilian teenager reached the second round following a dominant straight-sets win over Hubert Hurkacz, whereas Herbert battled past countryman Benjamin Bonzi in a gruelling 5-set match that lasted 3 hours and 27 minutes. The winner of this match gets a third-round clash against Gael Monfils or Jack Draper

Joao Fonseca vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert Preview

Teenage sensation Joao Fonseca is catching the attention of the tennis world. Following his win at the Next Gen Finals in 2024, the Brazilian started 2025 from where he ended last season. Fonseca clinched the Canberra challenger and made it to the second round of the Australian Open defeating Andrey Rublev on the way.

He then won the Argentina Open, and another challenger in Phoenix, before losing some of his momentum. The clay season has been challenging for the youngster with early losses in Madrid, Rome, and the Estoril challenger. Even so, he has won 82% of his service games on this surface this year and saved nearly 60% break points with 42 aces.

Herbert on the other hand has featured mostly on the challenger circuit this year, with next to no success on the main tour. In fact, he has played only 4 main tour matches in 2025 and has a 2-2 record.

Joao Fonseca vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head-to-Head Record

Rising young sensation Joao Fonseca and Pierre-Hughes Herbert will be playing against one another for the first time in their careers. Although it could be a tricky matchup for the Brazilian, especially with the home crowd supporting Herbert, Fonseca should be able go 1-0 up in this head-to-head.

Joao Fonseca vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert Career Comparison

Fonseca is new to the professional world of tennis having just turned pro last year. Despite that, the Brazilian has already claimed his first ATP title this year in Argentina. Currently ranked 65 in the world, he has reached as high as 59.

Herbert on the other hand turned pro in 2010, however that first title on tour at this level still eludes him. Well outside the top 100 at present, Herbert had at one point climbed up to 36 in the world.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
