Jets Owner Woody Johnson Stands behind Aaron Glenn – Places Blame Squarely on Justin Fields

The New York Jets succumbed to yet another loss in week 7 against the Carolina Panthers. The 13-6 loss to the Panthers meant that the Jets will now enter week 8 once again as the only winless team in the league this season.

How things have changed since their week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers is quite surprising to see. Despite that loss, the Jets played well, in particular, quarterback Justin Fields, who went toe-to-toe with Aaron Rodgers to nearly pull off a win.

And while the defense may have given away plenty of points in the first 5 games, it’s the latter 2 games that have been even more concerning, as New York’s offense couldn’t win against either the Broncos in week 6 or the Panthers last week, despite both teams putting up just 13 points.

Jets Owner Holds Justin Fields Accountable for Team’s Failure

The early indication ahead of week 8 out of New York is that there may be a change under center with head coach Aaron Glenn leaning toward starting Tyrod Taylor against the Bengals.

Woody Johnson, the owner of the Jets, was present for the NFL owners’ fall meeting on Tuesday, when he answered a few media questions.

When asked how much confidence he still had in the head coach, Johnson did not mince his words. It was evident that the Jets’ owner continues to place his trust in Aaron Glenn, but the same cannot be said for quarterback Justin Fields.

“It looks like (Glenn) is turning around part of it,” said Johnson before calling out Fields as the problem. “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got. He has the ability, but something is not jiving. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you are going to see similar results across the league. You have to play consistently at that position and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the remainder of the season.”

Johnson then added, “If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.”

What Do Fields’ Numbers Say?

Judging on what Johnson said, it is worth noting here that Fields, who has started 6 games for the Jets this season, has completed 63.7% of his passes, but has just 4 passing touchdowns and has a passer rating of 91.1. At the same time, Fields is currently posting a career low QBR of just 31.8.

The Jets owner also went on to add that the decision of who starts under center for the week 8 game against the Bengals will be completely Aaron Glenn’s call. It seems, however, that after a 0-7 start and after benching Fields against the Panthers last week, the Jets are gearing up for a change at the quarterback position.

It will be interesting to see how things play out in the upcoming weeks in New York, but one thing is for sure: the time is ticking for the former Bears’ signal caller.
