Pegula was the runner-up at the Miami Open last week.
After a heartbreaking end to her Miami Open 2025 campaign, it’s business as usual for World No. 4 Jessica Pegula in Charleston. The veteran American came through 6-0 6-3 against Iryna Shymanovich in the Round of 32, and will face Ajla Tomljanovic in the last 16 stage. For anyone expecting a cruise to victory for ‘Jess’, think again.
The biggest moment of Ajla Tomljanovic’s career came at the 2022 US Open, when she beat Serena Williams in her final tournament en route to reaching the quarterfinal stage. At Indian Wells last month, she came through qualifying before falling in Round-1. In fact, the Australian faced Pegula in Austin earlier this year too. Having beaten 16th seed Peyton Stearns in the Charleston Round of 32, she is riding a wave of confidence.

Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula has been doing all the right things, except for crossing that final hurdle. For the longest time, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has been her kryptonite. Yet, this does not change the fact that the 31-year-old has been having a phenomenal 2025 season – winning in Austin and reaching the final at Adelaide and Miami.
The head to head record between Jessica Pegula and Ajla Tomljanovic is tied at 2-2. It is a rivalry that dates back to 2009, with the most recent encounter happening in early 2025.
Ajla Tomljanovic dominated the early stages of her duel with Jessica Pegula. She won the first two matches against her American counterpart. Contrarily, the reigning US Open finalist was a late bloomer of sorts, and it was only in 2024 that she managed her first victory over the Aussie sensation. Following this, she backed it up with another thumping success in Austin, Texas.

Although Tomljanovic managed to take a set off Pegula in Austin just over a month ago, this is a different surface and a different occasion. The Australian could cause Pegula some troubles on the American’s service games, but there are no hiccups expected in this Round of 16 bout. Pegula enters on the back of a statement victory, and should leave Credit One Stadium with another one.
Thriving on hard-court and clay 💅
