Jenson Button wants Russell and Verstappen together at Mercedes F1
At this point, it almost confirmed that Max Verstappen is going to Mercedes. The majority all believes that he is going to replace George Russell in the team. Max Verstappen’s switch to Mercedes was merely a rumour at the start. Although, in the past couple of months it has gained a lot of traction turning it into a announcement waiting to be revealed.
The major analysts and experts of Formula 1 believe the move is already a done deal. Red Bull Racing and its fallout with Christian Horner seems to be serving as the catalyst for the same. However, the rumours are not at all kind towards George Russell. The clear verdict in the community points towards Russell’s replacement at the Silver Arrows. The Briton was previously confident about getting a new contract with Mercedes. He still considers Mercedes as the no.1 option for racing in Formula 1.
While the major media houses are promoting Russell’s replacement at Mercedes F1, Button is of a different opinion. Jenson Button wants to see Russell and Verstappen working together at Mercedes F1.
He believes that a pair of experienced and talented drivers at Mercedes will be a boon for the team. Jenson Button is no stranger to competition in team. He has worked with Sergio Perez, Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa as his teammates. He considers George Russell as championship material. Quoting his performance against Lewis Hamilton, Button believes there’s no reason for Mercedes to let go of George Russell-
“If he goes to Mercedes, it’s a different thing altogether. You know, that car is not going to be designed around him. So, is it going to work for him? I don’t know. I mean, the best in the world should be able to make that work for him. It’s a tough one on George, because George is at the top of his game. I think he’s been so competitive. When you see what he did against Lewis in the last few years, he is World Championship material.”

“So, to replace Max with him, it just seems like a strange move. I know they’ve got the young Kimi Antonelli, who’s 18, who could be a future star. But we still don’t know that. Whereas George is there, he is good, and you need two very competitive drivers with this new era of the sport. Next year, obviously lots of regulation changes, car change, engine change. So, for me, George and Max would be a better line-up.”
The biggest obstacle in making this pairing come true is the bitter dynamic of the pair. The rivalry between George Russell and Max Verstappen is very intense in the current season. It’s difficult to believe that the pair won’t clash at Mercedes.
The Silver Arrows would avoiding taking a risk which puts them in the same situation as Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
nhl I work as a Writer at The Playoffs specialising in NHL, Formula 1 and Motorsports. I got into online journalism a couple of years ago. I used to be an intern for a website managing their Formula 1 content and then I served an entire year as a contractual writer.
Read moreFor me, online journalism was not something I expected. I am a Mechanical Engineer aiming to join Formula 1. At the same time, I am a poet, writer and my university’s Literary Club Lead. One day the dots connected together and I realised I could use my writing skills to convey my passion for Motorsports.
The biggest aspects I love about my role are- Scuderia Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel. When I am not fawning over them I like to convey my opinions to the public, in a manner which helps them gain a new point of view. I love helping people explore new ideas about Motorsports and obviously get recognised as a writer all over the world.
Message to Readers: I promise you one day you’ll see me managing operations on track with a Formula 1 team ; )
