Paolini faces confident Fernandez in the second round of Bad Homburg.
Second seed Jasmine Paolini will kick off her Bad Homburg campaign against Leylah Fernandez in the second round. The Italian earned a first-round bye as one of the top seeds and now faces a confident Fernandez, who dispatched wild card Tatjana Maria in straight sets, delivering a dominant bagel in the opener and edging a tiebreak in the second. With Paolini adjusting from clay success and Fernandez finding rhythm on grass, this matchup could be shaped as much by timing as by talent.

Paolini’s season has picked up pace after a rocky start. Though she suffered a straight-sets loss to Ons Jabeur in the Berlin opener, her clay-court form was impressive. She captured the Rome title with wins over Coco Gauff, Peyton Stearns, and Diana Shnaider, and teamed up with Sara Errani to take home doubles titles in both Rome and Roland Garros.
Earlier, she also had made semifinal runs in Stuttgart and Miami. Stat-wise, she’s posted 45 aces in 35 matches, winning 60.7% of first-serve points, 46.8% on return, and converting 51.6% of her break chances.

Fernandez made a solid start with a semifinal run in Abu Dhabi and third-round finishes in Melbourne and Doha. But since then, her results have dipped, failing to get past the second round until a quarterfinal showing in Nottingham, where she lost to Dayana Yastremska. In 26 matches this year, she has hit 46 aces, won 65.3% on first serve, 41.1% on return, and converted 40% of break points.

Leylah Fernandez holds a 3-1 edge over Jasmine Paolini in their head-to-head, but the gap is narrowing. Their rivalry kicked off in 2021 in Abu Dhabi, where Fernandez cruised to a straight-sets win. She backed that up with two more commanding victories in Doha and at the Billie Jean King Cup in 2023.
But the tide began to shift last year in Dubai, when Paolini finally cracked the code and claimed a straight-sets win of her own. As they gear up for their fifth meeting in Bad Homburg, Fernandez still leads the series, but Paolini is closing in, and another win here would make that head-to-head look closer.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Dubai | Round of 32 | Jasmine Paolini | 6-3, 6-4 |
| 2023 | BJK Cup | Finals | Leylah Fernandez | 6-2, 6-3 |
| 2023 | Doha | Qualifying R1 | Leylah Fernandez | 6-2, 6-4 |
| 2021 | Abu Dhabi | Round of 64 | Leylah Fernandez | 6-4, 6-2 |
| Jasmine Paolini | Category | Leylah Fernandez |
| 4 | Current Ranking | 29 |
| 411-280 | Career W-L | 211-143 |
| 25-10 | YTD W-L | 14-15 |
| 3 | Career Titles | 3 |
| 0 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
While Leylah’s head-to-head lead stands, her recent inconsistency could tilt the balance, and Paolini’s current form may give her the edge on grass this time.
