Talk is cheap in boxing, but confidence can be expensive. Jarrell Miller has never been short on either. The Brooklyn heavyweight has built his reputation as much on his mouth as his fists. His trash talk helped him secure big fights early in his career. Unfortunately, his problems with drug tests derailed what looked like a promising journey to the top. Multiple failed tests cost him a shot at Anthony Joshua back in 2019. That setback sent his career into a tailspin that he’s still trying to recover from.
Now Miller finds himself in familiar territory. He is making big claims while trying to prove he belongs with the elite. His latest target is none other than Oleksandr Usyk, the two time undisputed heavyweight champion who has looked practically untouchable.
Miller recently told The Ring that he knows for a fact he can beat Usyk. He claimed that with proper training and a full camp, he would run over the Ukrainian champion. These are bold words from a fighter coming off back-to-back disappointing results against Daniel Dubois and Andy Ruiz Jr.
“I know for a fact I can beat Usyk. With me training and me having a proper training camp, I know I can beat Usyk…I would run him over. Usyk has a problem with guys who put their chin down and want to bang out.”

Before Miller can think seriously about Usyk, he needs to handle his business with Michael Hunter. The two heavyweight contenders are set to clash on September 11 in Las Vegas as part of the Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford fight week festivities. This fight represents a crucial crossroads for both men. Miller hasn’t fought since his majority draw with Ruiz Jr. Meanwhile Hunter has been steadily climbing the rankings. A loss here would likely end any realistic talk of title shots for either fighter.
Miller’s confidence sounds familiar because fans have heard it before from other heavyweights. Daniel Dubois made similar claims about being able to handle Usyk’s style. Dubois talked a big game leading up to their fight at Wembley Stadium. He believed his power and aggression would be too much for the slick southpaw. The result was a brutal reality check. Usyk dropped Dubois multiple times over five rounds, leaving the British fighter practically unconscious by the end and taking his IBF title in the process.
The pattern keeps repeating itself in the heavyweight division. Fighters see Usyk’s smaller frame and think they can overpower him. They watch his technical style and assume they can rough him up on the inside. What they don’t account for is his incredible footwork, timing, and boxing IQ that has carried him through an undefeated professional career. Jarell Miller talks about putting his chin down and wanting to bang, but that’s exactly the type of fighter Usyk has been dismantling for years. The champion’s ability to make adjustments and find openings against aggressive opponents is what separates him from the pack!
