Jamie Vardy To Leave Leicester City After 13 Years at the Club

Abhinav Goel

Signed from Fleetwood Town in 2012 for just £1 million, Vardy become a club icon at the King Power Stadium.

Jamie Vardy’s journey with Leicester City is nearing its end. The 38-year old striker will depart the club at the end of the current season, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 13-year spell that will forever be etched in Premier League history. Vardy, widely considered one of Leicester’s all-time greats, was at the center of the Foxes’ stunning 2015-16 title triumph.

Vardy also played a pivotal role in Leicester’s FA Cup win in 2021. Despite signing a one-year extension last summer, this season has proved difficult both for Leicester and Vardy. In the aftermath of Leicester City’s relegation from the Premier League, Vardy took to social media to share a heartfelt message. The striker called the season “miserable” and a “total embarrassment.”

In the video released by Leicester City on social media, Jamie Vardy said, “I feel gutted this day is coming, but I knew it would come eventually. I have had 13 unbelievable years at this club, with lots of success, and some downs. But the majority all highs. Leicester will always have a place in my heart.”

Leicester City Chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, said: “Jamie is unique. He is a special player and an even more special person. He holds a place in the hearts of everyone connected to Leicester City, and he certainly has my deepest respect and affection. I am endlessly grateful for everything he has given to this Football Club.

“Although Jamie’s time with us as a player is ending, he and his family will always be welcomed back to King Power Stadium with open arms after all he has achieved. On behalf of everyone at Leicester City, I wish Jamie and his family the very best for the future and I know our supporters will join us in giving him the send-off he deserves at the end of this season.”

Signed from Fleetwood Town in 2012 for just £1 million, Vardy become a club icon at the King Power Stadium. He went on to become one of the Premier league’s most feared finishers. In the 2019-20 season, Jamie Vardy made history by becoming the oldest player to win the Premier League Golden Boot at the age of 33.

He continued to be a key figure for Leicester, netting 18 goals during their promotion-winning campaign last season and adding seven more in the current season. With 198 goals in 435 appearances, Vardy’s name will forever be linked to Leicester City’s golden era. His final game at the King Power Stadium will be the Premier League match against Ipswich on Sunday, 18 May.
